According to Joel Sherman of the Post, the New York Mets have checked in on Oakland A’s closer Andrew Bailey:

#Mets inquired on #A's Bailey, but feeling is Oakland is selling high and Mets do not have enough willing to part with 42 minutes ago via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @Joelsherman1 Joel Sherman

Earlier today Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported that the Texas Rangers were attempting to trade for the 6’3″ right-hander.  At 23-years of age and a career 2.04 ERA to his credit, Oakland is right to ask a lot.  Still, Bailey’s success does not come without risk as the Jersey native has battled injuries throughout his young career.  After pitching over 80 innings as a rookie in 2009, Bailey has now failed to reach the 50 IP plateau in consecutive seasons.

I think Bailey is definitely the high-reward type of player Alderson would like to make a run at if the price was right, but what Sherman has heard is probably accurate and justified.  Oakland watched their young reliever finish off last year by closing out four consecutive games without allowing a hit and can refer to his performance at the end of the year to potential buyers.  I’d imagine the competition for Bailey’s services would be high and the Mets front office has yet to show any indication that they’re willing to compete when it comes to a free agent or trade target.

Until I see the team enter a bidding war, let alone win one, I’ll stick with the notion that Sandy and company will continue to bargain shop and pounce when a deal presents itself.  I’m not knocking the philosophy, I realize that circumstances dictate actions, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping for a little splash this off-season.  I’m not greedy, I don’t need a cannonball, I’ll take a couple drops from a poorly executed flying one-and-a-half somersaults forward dive any day of the week.
