Mets News and Notes: R.A Dickey had a chance to move closer to 20 wins, but his teammates couldn't score against the Rockies so Dickey remains stuck on 15. The Mets are now a season-worst eight games under .500 and are tied with the Phillies for third place. The biggest news of the day, though, involves their other veteran star pitcher, Johan Santana. After initial deciding that Santana would make his next start, the Mets announced that Santana has a stiff back. He will have an MRI on Tuesday. For more Santana reports, the Post, News, Newsday, Star-Ledger , and the Bergen Record have stories.  The slumping Andres Torres won't make any excuses about his hitting. He is 7-for-his-last-33 and finally broke an 0-for-19 slump with a ninth inning single on Monday. Adam Rubin reports that lefty Robert Carson is being promoted. Carson will be promoted from Triple-A Buffalo for Tuesday's game. Jeremy Hefner will be placed on paternity leave to temporarily ope...

Johan Santana Shut Down For Season

Mets' starting pitcher Johan Santana has been shut down for the rest of the 2012 season due to inflammation in his lower back. The Mets placed Santana on the DL today, but surgery is not needed. The best thing Johan can do is rest and make sure he is back strong for next season. After missing all of last season following major shoulder surgery, Santana has come back strong...

Despite A Stellar Effort From Dickey, Mets Fall 3-1 To Rockies

At this stage of the game, all the Mets have left are moral victories. One of those moral victories would be finishing the season at .500, another would be to finish above the Phillies and Marlins. Both of those goals took a hit with tonight’s 3-1 loss to the Rockies at Citi Field. With the defeat, the Mets are now tied with the Phillies for 4th place, 18.5 games behind the first...

MMO Mailbag: Johan Santana As The 2013 Mets Closer

I received this interesting question yesterday from one of our readers, USMF. I have an idea on what to do with Santana next year and thought it could be a good debate question for the MMO staff. Seeing Johan’s recent struggles, I was wondering about moving Santana into the Closers Role next year similar to what the Braves did with John Smoltz. We know the pen has tons of problems...

MRI may determine if Mets' Santana is shut down

A long season has saddled Johan Santana with back pain, ankle discomfort and other maladies that he considers normal wear-and-tear for a starting pitcher. But examine them in the context of Santana's road back from left shoulder surgery, not to mention his importance to the team, and it becomes obvious why the New York Mets are considering shutting him down for the season. ...

He threw the first no-hitter in New York Mets history back on June 1st against the St. Louis Cardinals.  The Mets announced today that their history making pitcher, Johan Santana has been placed on the 15 day DL, a trip that could keep him out of the rotation for the remainder of 2012. Mets News and Notes: The METS ARE A MESS..... Mets 101 News and Notes: Could Johan Santana Be Done for the Season?

As the New York Mets continue their slow march to the end of the regular season, one troubling trend that can't be ignored is the sudden decline of Mets starter Johan Santana. Santana, who delivered what looks to be the apex of the 2012 season with his no hitter on June 1st, has fallen into a tailspin since that game. Santana's ERA since his no hitter is...

Mets Will Not Trade Johan Santana To Dodgers While Covering Most Of His Salary

The New York Mets will listen to any offers from teams who are interesting in acquiring Johan Santana over the next week and a half, as well as during the upcoming offseason. Santana, who earlier this season became the first Mets pitcher in franchise history to throw a no-hitter for the team, is signed through next season. And while the Mets could easily be talked into...

New York Mets baseball is becoming less of a priority for fans

Let’s face it, New York Mets baseball is becoming less and less of a priority for fans as the team falls from relevancy.  They can’t hit, the bullpen is infuriating, and all we continue to hear from the front office is that spending will be limited moving forward.  Maybe ownership is handcuffed by two of the worst contracts in all of baseball for 2013 (Jason Bay – $16 million...

Insect interrupts Mets-Nationals game

We have all seen a squirrel on the field.  The black cat, while much rarer, has happened a few times too.  How do they get on the field?  Nobody knows.  Sunday afternoon games between the Mets and the Nationals was interrupted briefly because of a living being on the field.  It wasn’t even a nasty seagull.  A praying mantis of all things delayed the start of the bottom of...
