The New York Mets were defeated 3-0 by the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon in Miller Park.  Chris Young started for NY and allowed three runs, including two solo homers to Ryan Braun, while striking out eight over 6 2/3 innings of work and was rewarded with his 8th loss of the season:

Following the loss, Chris Young spoke with reporters and considering his journey back from shoulder surgery, he’s still happy with his season, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York:

“I didn’t want to come back to get hurt. I worked hard to be where I am. I haven’t had a day off from the time I had the surgery. I’ve worked hard to be out here. I didn’t come back thinking, ‘Oh, I wouldn’t make starts.’ I’ve taken care of myself. I’ve worked hard. I feel like I’m going to continue to get stronger. …It means I’m healthy. It means I’m healthy. I think I’ve pitched pretty well, better than my record probably indicates. But, there’s a lot of room for improvement.”

As for the road back, Young stated:

“There’s a lot of challenges with it. I feel like I’ve had some bad luck. Hopefully, that’s behind me. I’m 15 months out of surgery, surgery a lot of people thought I’ve never come back from. … I’ve got two (starts) left. I’m going to try to improve these next two, go out and help us win games. One’s against Miami, a team that we’re fighting to be ahead of in the standings. The other is against Atlanta, a teaming fighting for the playoffs.”

You have to admire the work Young put in to get to where he is today. I have to believe that no one predicted he would make 18 starts for the Mets this season. He beat the odds and did so with a very admirable 4.37 ERA.

M.I.A: There is not much to say about the Mets offense on Sunday afternoon.   Making just his third start of his young career, Brewers starter Wily Peralta allowed just two hits, while striking out five over eight shut-out innings. According to Mets manager Terry Collins, unfamiliarity played a big role in the clubs lack of offense.

“I think it had a lot to do with it,” Collins told reporters following the loss. “But he’s also got great stuff. He’s got a live arm, command of his breaking ball. I was very impressed. He pitched inside when he wanted to. Threw the ball great.”

Yeah.  Wish I could agree.  But when the club goes two plus weeks without scoring three lousy runs in a game, I think it’s safe to say that not being very good played a bigger role in the lack of offense.

A REASON TO TUNE IN: The Mets will begin their final home stand of the season tomorrow night, when they host the Philadelphia Phillies.  R.A. Dickey will continue his quest for 20 wins tomorrow night as he squares off against Cliff Lee.
