The New York Mets have placed right-hander pitcher Scott Atchison on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. Atchison has been bothered by the ailment all season and said he had trouble feeling his fingers in Monday night's 6-3 loss at St. Louis. He gave up three hits and one run and did not record an out in 12 pitches. Atchison is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 19 appearances. The Mets called up Collin McHugh from their Triple-A Las Vegas squad. Mets Need Niese To Be The Pitcher They Thought They Were Getting

Including this weekend’s 11-2 flameout loss to Pittsburgh, the Mets have lost Jon Niese’s last five starts, with him giving up 22 runs and not getting out of the fifth inning in three of them. He has not come close to resembling what the Mets think he should be, and that’s the No. 1 starter in their rotation. The first game in that slide, April 18 at Colorado, and the one...

Rafael Montero Warms Up A Cold Binghamton Night

Rafael Montero Looks Intimidating (Photo by MMO Contributor Gordon Donovan) The Dominator took to the mound for the Binghamton Mets tonight, in temperatures that made it seem more like an April night in the upstate New York city, than a night in the middle of May. Rafael Montero stood on the mound, with his glove in front of his face, so the batter could only see a pair of eyes staring...

Schwinden Gives Up Five Earned Runs, 51s Can’t

Albuquerque 8, Las Vegas 5 It was a tough night for Chris Schwinden, who was knocked around for four runs in the first inning, and this left the 51s in a defecit that they would never look back from. Schwinden would be on the hook for five earned runs in his five innings of action. Greg Peavey had no more luck than he did in his two innings of work, as he allowed two earned runs...

Mets Card of the Week: 1989 Keith Hernandez

1989 TOPPS BOX-BOTTOM KEITH HERNANDEZ Box-bottom cards are Spinal Tap-ian in both name and concept. They are the 18-inch Stonehenge of cards. These cards go to 11. Donruss began producing cards on the bottom of its wax boxes in 1985, and Topps picked up the glove in 1986. Donruss came to its collective senses quickly, and stopped printing the cards after the 1987 set; Topps, however...

Mets fall to seven-games under .500

The New York Mets were defeated, 3-2 by the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night, dropping to a season-worst seven games under .500 in the process. Rick Ankiel, who signed with the Mets earlier in the day after clearing waivers, nearly robbed Ty Wigginton of a pinch-hit double to open the bottom of the seventh with what would have been a nice diving grab. The blooper, however, popped...

Ankiel signs with Mets, gets start

The New York Mets signed Rick Ankiel and started him in center field on Monday night against the St. Louis Cardinals, the team that converted him from wild lefty` to outfielder. The 33-year-old thought it a bit comforting that he returned to the majors in St. Louis, where he arrived as a hard-throwing lefty starter in 1999 but couldn't control his pitches. He's been an outfielder...
