To make room for newly-acquired slugger Travis Hafner, the Yankees designated outfielder Russ Canzler for assignment. Canzler is no stranger to being DFA’d. After spending last season with the Cleveland Indians, Canzler was claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays in December, reclaimed by the Tribe in January, and finally claimed by the Yankees two weeks after that. Now he is on the loose again and maybe it’s time for the Mets to jump in and see what all the fuss is about. Canzler is no difference maker, so lets get that out of the way. But considering the dilapidated state of the current Mets outfield, beggars can’t be choosy, and this particular player does have some merits. The first few things that jump out at you from a Mets-need standpoint is that he bats righthanded, has power, and plays the outfield. Canzler, 26, was quite the popular player in 2011 when he was named the International League MVP after batting .314/.401/.540 with 18 homers and 83 RBI for the Triple-A Durham Bulls in...

Outfield alert: Mets sign Marlon Byrd

When your team has an outfield situation as desperate as the Mets’ is (Andrew Brown is going to compete for a starting job after having trouble staying on Colorado’s major league roster in 2012), any new is good news. Yesterday, that good news came in the form of 11-year veteran Marlon Byrd signing a Minor League contract. #Mets have signed Marlon Byrd to a minor league contract...

Yankees Officially Sign Travis Hafner

From Yankees.com: The Yankees on Friday finalized a one-year contract with free-agent slugger Travis Hafner, who is expected to help fill the club's designated hitter slot for the 2013 season. Hafner, 35, batted .228 with 12 home runs and 34 RBIs in 64 games for the Indians last season. Cleveland cut ties with Hafner in October, choosing to pay the left-handed hitter a $2...

Is Jose Valverde worth the risk for the Mets?

The Mets lack a reliable reliever, and although they have some younger talent who could potentially fill the void, virtually everyone in the bullpen is a question mark. Over the weekend, rumors arose that the Mets were thinking about pursuing the flamboyant closer, Jose Valverde. The Mets do desperately need an arm in the bullpen to add some depth, and to replace their current closer...

Travis Hafner Will Be the Latest Vet to Revive Career With The Yankees

So is anyone sick of talking about Alex Rodriguez yet? Since the answer to that question is probably yes, here is some more Yankee news that should interest fans.  On Thursday, the Yankees and former Cleveland Indian Travis Hafner agreed to a one year deal worth about $2 million which could turn to $4 million based on plate appearances.  Hafner is expected to fill the role that...

Mystery Pronk in the Bronx

As of this writing, it sounds like Travis Hafner is going to sign a contract with the Yankees, after (surprise!) Cleveland turned down his $13 million club option for 2013. Pronk Bars are a distant memory, but Hafner still has his uses. For all of criticism he has received because of his play (or lack thereof) relative to his contract in Cleveland, Hafner has actually been a pretty...

Mets Stockpiling AARP Eligibles; Sign Marlon Byrd

Marlon Byrd, coming off a 50-game suspension following his June 2012 release from the Boston Red Sox has agreed to a minor league contract with The New York Mets. This marks the Mets third free-agent acquisition of the week.  Byrd, at age 35, is the youngster in the crowd. The Mets outfield projects as one of the weakest in the Major Leagues.  Each position could stand...

Alderson Mets still have OF options

Even after the Marlon Byrd signing Marc Carig of Newsday tweeted that Sandy Alderson says the Mets still have options for the outfield.  Many have speculated in the last few hours that Byrd along with the other outfield candidates have essentially ended any pursuit of Michael Bourn. Don't forget the Mets signed veteran Fred Lewis last season and tucked him away in AAA until...

Mets rumors: New York pursuing Jose Valverde

The New York Mets are so unsatisfied with their current closer situation that the team is pursuing free agent Jose Valverde to likely unseat Frank Francisco, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Alderson is pursuing Jose Valverde to compete with -- or more likely unseat -- Francisco as closer, a baseball source told ESPNNewYork.com. If the Mets were to...

Russ Canzler and why it is worth it for the Mets to take a chance on

OF/1B Russ Canzler was designated for assignment for the forth time this offseason, this time by the New York Yankees. What separates Canzler from, lets say Nick Evans, is the fact that he never clears waivers, explaining how he has gone from Cleveland to Toronto, back to Cleveland to the Yankees, all since last season ended. Last year, Chris Schwinden went on a similar path, being...

Reports: Mets close to signing P Lyon

The New York Mets are close to reaching a deal with free-agent relief pitcher Brandon Lyon, multiple media outlets reported Sunday. It's unclear what the terms of the agreement would be, and MLB.com reported that the deal has not been finalized and Lyon is still talking with other teams. Lyon, 33, was 4-2 with a 3.10 earned run average with the Blue Jays and Astros last...

Hot Stove Notes: Yankees Add Hafner, Red Sox Counter with Overbay

Both the Yankees and Red Sox added veteran bats to their roster yesterday, as Travis Hafner and New York agreed to a one-year deal worth $2 million, while the Red Sox inked first baseman Lyle Overbay to a minor league deal with an invite to Big League Spring Training. Were these two moves linked to one another, like the old days? That’s doubtful, but it was a good way to start...

Mets sign OF Byrd to minor league deal

The New York Mets announced Friday that they signed outfielder Marlon Byrd to a minor league contract. Byrd, 35, batted .210 in 47 games with the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox last year. He was also suspended 50 games for testing positive for Tamoxifen, a drug that is reportedly used to prevent post-testosterone-cycle crashes. Byrd has 82 home runs and 445 RBI in his 11-year career.
