Obviously, these rumors are a little tough to swallow a day after Jose Reyes leaves the team, but, this is a cost conscious team now that needs to be creative in both free agency and on the trade market.  So let’s talk about these guys, as Chad Qualls and Andy Dirks are off season options for these Mets.

Chad Qualls is coming off a good year with the Padres throwing up a 3.51 ERA in 77 appearances, and pitching to a 1.25 WHIP.  While those numbers aren’t mind-bogglingly good, they are a definite improvement over Bobby Parnell in the eighth inning slot, who pitched to a 3.64 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.  So, while talking about Chad Qualls doesn’t exactly get me going, it would be a nice piece to the bullpen.

The Daniel Murphy rumors seem to be flying a bit this week, and I don’t think that was unexpected as he seems to be one of the Mets most valuable trade pieces, even coming off a season ending injury.  As Sherman tweets, the Tigers, Blue Jays and Padres have expressed interest in Murphy, but perhaps more interesting is the name that Sherman tosses out as another option in center field…Andy Dirks.

Dirks had a pretty good first season in the pros hitting .251 with 7 homers and 28 RBI while stealing 5 bags with a .296 OBP in 78 games.  Not a great stat line, but certainly decent from a rookie.  But that stat line probably isn’t what has the Mets thinking about Dirks.  I’d imagine their interest has something to do with him going 4-7 with 3 homers, 4 RBI and a stolen base in 3 games against the Mets this past season.  Oh, and he’s only 25 and cheap.

But is he worth dealing Murphy for?  That, I’m not so sure about.  But I do like the creativity that Sandy Alderson is showing because he knows HE HAS TO be creative to make this team work.  And while this team may not look like a winner, and probably won’t be this season, did anyone think the Arizona Diamondbacks would be?

Marlins will make Reyes cut his hair

Rules are rules. The Miami Marlins may be serious about spending money this offseason, as evidenced by the $106 million they threw at Jose Reyes and the $200 million-plus they are dangling in front of Albert Pujols, but it would appear they are still serious about their clubhouse rules as well. As they did with [...]

Jose Reyes: Mets "Didn't Want Me"

The courtship for Jose Reyes by the Miami Marlins began at one minute past midnight on Nov. 3 and was finalized Sunday with a six-year $106 million contract because of the New York Mets feeble effort to sign their four-time All-Star shortstop. "They didn't make me an offer," said Reyes decked out in a new Marlins jersey at a press conference  in Miami this afternoon...

Photo: Jose Reyes in a Marlins hat, thanks the Mets

“I have to thank the New York Mets for giving me the opportunity to play in the big leagues,” Jose Reyes said this afternoon, while wearing his new Marlins hat and jersey. “Right now, I’m really excited and happy to go to Miami.I’m part of this family now, and I have to move on.” He said he has a lot of love for his fans in New York, who supported him through the good...

Why I Won’t Boo Jose Reyes

For the last few week’s i’ve been mentally preparing myself for the inevitable fate that Jose Reyes would sign with the Miami Marlins. As much as I tried to stay as optimistic as I could, realistically I knew the team was moving in a different direction. This regime will not give 6 year contracts to players with an injury riddled past as grey as Reyes. Some Mets fan’s will...

Jose Is Gone -- I'm Officially Over It

So, its been about 72 hours since former Met, Jose Reyes, decided to sign with the Marlins for 6 year/$106 million dollar deal.  I was mad at first.  Too mad to write about it, as our lovely little site here rightfully frowns on profanity.  Then I wrote about it and now...I'm good.  I've never been one of those "the sky is falling" type of fans.  After a few...

Tigers fans react to Murphy for Dirks

Yesterday, the New York Post’s Joel Sherman said the Mets have shown interest in Tigers OF Andy Dirks, while in talks regarding Daniel Murphy. In no way does Sherman suggest a one-for-one deal was discussed. Nevertheless, here are four Tigers fans in the MLB Trade Rumors comment section reacting to such an idea:

Was Jose Reyes Worth The Money?

After writing previously that the Marlins might be spending on the wrong things after the Heath Bell signing, of course, the Marlins prove everyone wrong and go out and sign Jose Reyes to a pretty big deal: six years at $106 million guaranteed, with an option for a seventh year as the Marlins pay Reyes big time money for him to man the 6-hole into his age 35 season. The contract...

Mets crumbling under Wilpons' debts

Among the events in Mets history that will live in infamy, Jose Reyes' defection to the Marlins ranks close to the top -- right there with the trade that sent Tom Seaver to the Reds in 1977. Yes, it's true, Reyes is leaving of his own free will, signing a wildly overpriced six-year, $106 million contract. But his absence will be no less traumatic to Mets fans than Seaver...

Reyes Leaves Mets for Marlins' $106M Deal

Jose Reyes is taking his talents to South Beach. The superstar shortstop, who finally shook off chronic injuries and won a batting title with the Mets last season, has reportedly signed a six-year, $106 million contract with the Miami Marlins. The deal includes an option that could bring the package to $120 million, according to The Associated Press. The Marlins, who have dropped...

Future in the Past

And with that one tweet, it hits you. The thing that we've been preparing for during the better part of a year is finally here. Jose Reyes has left the New York Mets. He's on his way to the Miami Marlins, a franchise he once fought tooth and nail against (literally) on a six-year $106 million deal. It was a deal that the Mets had no interest in topping, matching, or even...

GM pushes idea he can do more with Reyes’ money

DALLAS — Now comes the business of the Mets trying to field a competitive team without Jose Reyes. As Mets fans howled yesterday — many vowing to begin an un-Occupy Citi Field movement to show their displeasure over losing Reyes to the Marlins — questions swirled over the direction of the franchise. “The...

Catch of the Day: Marlins finalize deal with Reyes

While the Miami Marlins wait on Albert Pujols to make up his mind, they introduced another piece of their offseason puzzle on Wednesday by announcing a six-year deal with shortstop Jose Reyes.

First Big Free Agent Splash

There was no “decision” on ESPN. Mets fans aren’t burning jerseys in the streets. None of the billboards in Time Square are being ripped down. In fact, the news came quietly on a night when most sports fans were glued to the NFL or their Fantasy Football teams. But another star is coming to Miami. No offense to Joe Nathan or Heath Bell, but Jose Reyes was the first big name...

Mets moves not sexy, but make sense

DALLAS — None of this replaces Jose Reyes, especially when it comes to filling seats. No one ever bought a ticket to specifically watch Jon Rauch pitch. But the Mets made a series of incremental moves yesterday designed to — at the least — bring competence and competitiveness to their 2012 team while...

Things Sandy Alderson Says

I just read the complete transcript of Sandy Alderson’s press conference last night courtesy of ESPN New York. I feel like I’ve been sandbagged. Although I have a problem with a lot of things he said last night, my biggest issues were with these two items… What would be the message to Mets fans about 2012 if they watch what the Marlins are doing, what the Nationals are projected...
