Today Jonathon Niese stepped up for the Mets and delivered a fantastic pitching performance, which was combined with some more timely hitting, to allow the Mets to take the series from Pittsburgh on the strength of a 3-1 victory this afternoon.

Niese was awesome today.  He keep Pirates hitters off-balance for most of the day and really looked dominant at points.  But the credit for this win is not all Niese’s alone, as Bobby Parnell got the biggest out of the game.  When Niese got into trouble in the eighth and the Pirates had two men on with two outs, Parnell was asked to get out the Pirates best hitter, Andrew McCutcheon.  Parnell did a fantastic job of working both sides of the plate eventually getting McCutcheon to strike out, and look foolish doing it.  Not an easy feat.  Also, Frank Francisco recorded yet another save without incident today…A real treat.

At the dish for the Mets timely hitting was once again the story.  Two-out RBI hits from Lucas Duda and David Wright, combined with a sac fly off the bat of Kirk Nieuwenhuis was all the Mets would need today to take the game, and the series.

It was an up and down series for the Mets in Pittsburgh, but taking 2 of 3 is never a bad thing.  The Mets head home tomorrow to start a 4 game set with the Padres.

Let’s go Mets.
