According to rotoworld.com the Mets are considering trading power hitting first baseman Ike Davis during the off season to clear up a definite roster spot for Lucas Duda and move him to first. base This has to be mind boggling news to anyone who follows the Mets considering their lack of power this season, as well as the last four or five seasons.
Davis leads the team in home runs with 27 and no one else on the team even has 20. Not only that, but only four players on the team even have double digit home runs. He is literally the only true power hitter on the team and the only one who can consistently put the ball out in Citi Field. Everyone forgets that his batting average isn’t there because he started off so slow.
Since the All Star break Davis has hit .251 with 15 home runs and 32 RBI’s. Not to mention he has a .342 on base percentage in that span. He’s only going to get better. Unless they can somehow get a legitimate center fielder and a proven major league pitcher, there is no way the Mets should trade him.
To trade your only real power hitter on a team that ranks 26th in all of baseball in home runs makes no sense. He’s only 25, he’s only in his 3rd year (2nd full), and he has so much room to improve it’s scary. There is still another whole season before he even gets into his prime. Give it time and don’t jump the gun, Sandy. Unless a package of players comes along who are significantly improving the team, don’t trade him. It’ll be something the organization regrets for years to come. That would not be something new for the Mets, though.
