In a post to his blog for the Daily News, Andy Martino says the Mets will be looking for an “affordable” closer this winter, and lists Jonathan Broxton, Brad Lidge, and Joe Nathan as possibilities.
According to Martino, Broxton’s agent, BB Abbot, says his client would be agreeable to a one-year, incentive laden contract as he’s looking to re-establish himself as a closer.
Abbot told Martino he has not heard from the Mets regarding Broxton.
In regards to Lidge, Lidge’s agent Rex Gary said he doesn’t have a firm requirement to be a closer next season. He did not say whether or not the Mets have contacted him about Lidge.
Lastly, Nathan said he is open to both a short or long-term deal, but indicated he is looking for a closers role this winter, telling Martino “I’ve put time in and worked my butt off to return to closing games…I’m at the spot now where I know next season will be a good season for me. I’m fully healthy.”
