The first blow of negativity for the New York Mets has already struck, as center fielder Andres Torres will be placed on the DL after straining his calf yesterday against the Braves.

The injury happened in the seventh inning, with Torres chasing a fly ball hit by Braves rookie shortstop Tyler Pastornicky. Torres pulled up lame and stopped chasing the ball, allowing right fielder Lucas Duda to track down the ball. Pastornicky ended up with a triple on the play.

Torres was acquired by the Mets from the Giants this offseason for outfielder Angel Pagan, who had a breakout year in 2010 but took a step back last season. Torres missed 50 games last year with the Giants, and missed a week and a half worth of games this spring with the same calf injury that he aggravated on Thursday.

Torres will be replaced in center field for the Mets by Kirk Nieuwenhuis, a 24 year-old Mets prospect who had a .908 OPS in 53 games for AAA Buffalo last season. Nieuwenhuis has a decent eye at the plate, but strikes out too much. His power is above avearge for a center fielder, and profiled as a "good" prospect in our prospect rankings this offseason, profiling as a fourth outfielder for the Mets.
