METS CAN’T AFFORD TO WASTE HARVEY (AP) Terry Collins said the Mets are a different team with Matt Harvey, and that he gives them a presence a chance to win once every five days. That makes it is especially troubling when they waste one of his starts, as they did in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Harvey, who flirted with perfection in his previous start Tuesday against the White Sox, has given up two runs over 16 innings in his last two games. After winning his first four starts, he’s had four no-decisions in his last four, giving up just five runs. “He did his job,’’ Collins said of Harvey. “He can’t do the hitting for us. We needed him to take us deep into the game and that’s what he did. Matt did exactly what we wanted.’’ In defeat, the Mets lost three of four to Pittsburgh – a team they thought they should to beat, or at least compete against – and finished their homestand 2-4. They didn’t score more than three runs in any game of the homestand, and scored four or

Mets Matters: Matt Harvey On SI Cover; Collin McHugh Brought Up

When you’re fading fast and it’s not even June, you celebrate the little things. For the Mets, that would be Matt Harvey on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated. HARVEY: No jinxes please. Harvey won his first four starts, but has no-decisions in his last four. He has a Major League-best 1.44 ERA and is scheduled to start Friday in Chicago against the Cubs. ATCHISON TO...

Mets Lose Third Straight In 3-2 Loss To Bucs

PRETTY IN PINK? The Mets were beaten by the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 3-2 this afternoon in front of a nicely packed Mother’s Day crowd at Citi Field. Matt Harvey started and while he pitched good enough to win, he wasn’t at his best and he seemed to rely mostly on a variety of breaking balls and off-speed stuff rather than his usual 95-98 mph fastball. He tossed...

3 Up & 3 Down: Mets Served Up Some Bad Home Cooking Edition

Usually, it isn’t until after the All Star break, when we need to combine series to come up with 3 Ups and 3 Downs. This week was an exception with the Mets winning 2 out of 6 games against the Chicago White Sox & the Pittsburgh Pirates. Unless the Met offense wakes up real soon, we’re going to be in for a long season. Sorry to say, a first baseman batting .190 in the middle...

Buck wearing pink fingernail stickers

When New York Mets young ace Matt Harvey looks in for the signs from catcher John Buck he will see pink. Buck will wear pink reflective stickers on his fingernails Sunday to honor breast cancer survivors on Mother's Day. Catchers often paint their fingernails white to make it easier to decipher the signals they are giving for a particular pitch. Buck prefers the stickers from...

Mets Bullpen Not Getting Any Relief; Frank Francisco Suffers Setback

If you look at the Mets starting pitchers not named Matt Harvey, they have not been able to go deep into games of late.  On Saturday, the Mets bullpen had to pitch four or more innings for the eighth time in their last twelve games which has left the unit tired and limited. They called up funky throwing Greg Burke after sending Jeurys Familia to the DL in an effort to give the bullpen...

Game 37: Pirates 3 Mets 2

Well, that was wild.  There were a lot of ways that the Pirates could've lost this Sunday afternoon game against the Mets. They had a chance to really deliver a knockout punch to Matt Harvey in the second when Clint Barmes lead off the inning with his second homer (his first homer was against Stephen Strasburg, go figure) and then they loaded the bases up with just one out...

Pirates 3, Mets 2

You have to feel good about the Bucs taking winning on a day their spot starter went against an ace on the road, and that’s exactly what happened on Sunday afternoon as they finished off a series victory in New York. Phenom Matt Harvey had a solid afternoon, but was far from dominant. After the Bucs fell behind early, they answered with a home run in the third inning by Clint Barmes...

Was Valdespin Sent Up By Collins To Get Hit?

Updated by Joe D. at 2:30 PM Just caught this on MetsBlog who seems to have just caught on to what has been a two day debate here: It almost sounds like Collins put Valdespin in a situation he knew would end up with a hit-by-pitch, maybe in an effort to teach Valdespin a lesson, right? If that’s the case, is that why Valdespin threw a ‘tantrum,’ as fans and media have described it...

Terry Collins and platoon players

Creative and new ideas and solutions often seem to come along as a result of limitations.  Limitations are what forced Billy Beane and Paul DePodesta to architect ‘Moneyball’ in Oakland in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. After the rest of the league seemed to catch up with the A’s in the mid-2000’s, they came storming back with a vengeance last season, surprising everyone...

Collins Raises Fear Of Retaliation Against Wright Because Of Valdespin Antics

An enthusiastic high-five and an ecstatic dugout after Valdespin homers. (Gordon Donovan) This is getting utterly ridiculous… According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Mets Manager Terry Collins said that he could see the Pirates retaliating against Jordany Valdespin for his admiration of his ninth-inning homer on Friday night, but added that he doesn’t think Pittsburgh would...
