NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- David Wright wanted to hear one thing from the New York Mets before committing to them for the long haul. "I only wanted to make sure the organization had a commitment to winning," said Wright, the six-time All-Star third baseman and the franchise leader in hits. Wright got assurances in October when he was visited in his hometown of Norfolk, Va., by Mets general manager Sandy Alderson. After a round of golf and a late lunch, Wright was convinced he wanted to stay in New York. Wright made the commitment official Wednesday when he signed an eight-year, $138 million contract extension that runs through the 2020 season. That is the richest contract in Mets history, surpassing left-hander Johan Santana's six-year, $137.5 million contract that expires after next season. "I started out as a 19-year-old after getting drafted and I've considered the Mets' family part of my extended family ever since," Wright said during a press con...

Is Mets Financial Situation Better Than What’s Been Reported?
Does the $138 million dollar Wright contract change your opinion on the Mets financial situation? Is it a sign that things are better than what is being reported?
Ed Leyro – Things might be better, but until I see the Mets sign a big-time free agent instead of giving their money to players who were already here, I will have a modicum of doubt.
XtreemIcon -Â No, that remains unchanged...
Video: Wright has a message for Mets fans
I like this. Wright is the man. He’s going to be making a crap-load of money these next eight season, but he also genuinely wants to be here for the long haul. Hopefully, for his sake (and our sake), the Mets can assemble a good team around him because David Wright deserves to win.

Wanted: Third Basemen
If there's anything the last three weeks of baseball transactions have taught us (besides the fact that Jeffrey Loria is a big jerk), it's that a third baseman is a valuable commodity. Evan Longoria signed a big-time extension to remain a Ray until 2022, and then David Wright re-upped with the Mets until 2020. Longoria got $100 million for six years, while Wright pulled down...
