For those of you hoping the Dodgers would make some more moves at the deadline, have no fear, the August trade deadline is here. That’s right, the real trade deadline isn’t over yet, as the real trade deadline is August 31 at midnight eastern time. For those not familiar with how this works, the deadline that passed two days ago is the non-waiver deadline. This means that a player does not have to pass through waivers in order to be traded. It’s much easier to trade a player without having to pass them through waivers, which allows any team to claim the player. Here is more on how this works.

Starting August 1, teams have the option of placing any player they choose on waivers, hoping that they will clear waivers to allow some late season roster changes. Teams often decide to slash payroll in the month of August, this is one easy way of doing it. There are of course some rules that apply. Keep in mind that hundreds of players are placed on waivers in the month of August, it doesn’t mean anything, here is why;

The team with the worst record in the player’s league gets preference. If a player goes unclaimed in that player’s division, the claiming team with the lowest winning percentage in the other league gets preference.

If a team claims a player off waivers the following options apply:

  • Work out a  a trade with the claiming team for that player within two business days of the claim; or
  • Pull the player back off waivers and keep the player on the roster for the rest of the season; or
  • Do nothing. This allows the claiming team to take on the player’s existing contract, and place the the player on their 25-man roster.

Also, if a player is claimed and the waiving team exercises its rescission option, the waiving team may not use the option again for that player for the rest of the season. Should the team place the player on a  subsequent waiver during the same season, the player gets placed on irrevocable waivers, allowing  the claiming team to get the player essentially for nothing. You will see this happen all of the time throughout the season. Waivers is part of everyday baseball from the beginning of the season. Players can go claimed or unclaimed all of the time, but if no team claims a player off waivers after three business days, the player has cleared waivers and may be assigned to a minor league team, traded, or released.

Some notable players the Dodgers have traded for in the month of August over the last few years;

Greg Maddux2008

Jim Thome-2009

Jon Garland-2009

Ronnie Belliard-2009

The Dodgers lost Manny Ramirez on waivers to the Chicago White Sox in 2010.
