The Philadelphia Phillies received some potentially good news for their ailing lineup and first baseman. Slugger Ryan Howard will head to their Spring Training facility in Clearwater, Florida to begin baseball related activities. Howard could be swinging a bat in about a week.
Howard told Dan McQuade of CSN Philly:
“The tendon itself is fine, it’s strong. It’s just a matter of kind of getting back into the swing of things first, and then start hitting. I’ll probably give myself a week or so, see how it is … and then see about trying to start to hit.”
Howard’s return is seen by many as the spark the Phillies will need to ignite their offense which has been anemic so far in 2012. It is a lot of pressure for a player returning from major injury and beginning a contract extension that some feel was too long and for too much money.
Despite what Ruben Amaro and the Phillies say, they are anxious the get Ryan back in the lineup. While they have said all along that they will not rush hi...

Jimmy Rollins' two-run double in the fourth inning helped the Phillies on their way to a 5-2 victory. It was Rollins' first hit in 13 at-bats. Roy Halladay and the aces of the Philadelphia Phillies are living up to their billing, but not all other hyped staffs are. The experts say pitching continues to be the dominant force, but are they relying on easy numbers? Is it worth watching a national baseball broadcast to hear surface-oriented information? Facts are like an iceberg: Most of it is below the visible line.
Carlos Ruiz has very quietly been one of the best catchers in baseball over the past several years. Calling games for guys like Roy Halladay, catching no hitter’s and backing his team with key hits, Chooch never seems to get the credit he deserves.
But Phillies fans know that Chooch is the man. Last night Ruiz helped pitcher Joe Blanton get through 7 1/3 innings, allowing just...
Joe Blanton of the Philadelphia Phillies slots in behind the aces. How do the Braves compare at the bottom of their rotation? The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my recent coverage linked below.

*Big Jim Thome had to leave last night's game due to back stiffness? This seems like an all too familiar scene. Oh wait, it is, from when he was with the Phillies in 2005. Give the man a DL stint, he's not helping anyway, and call up Mike Fontenot.*Rollins was back in the leadoff spot last night. Hopefully Charlie keeps him there and bats Pierre second instead. J-Roll...
Joe Blanton alert! I have won a good chunk of coin simply betting against this guy anytime he pitches. I am so anti-Blanton I am taking the Cubs +135 on the road. Hopefully, Blanton doesn't find some magic like Matusz did earlier in the week.
Give me Timmy Ballgame and his career ERA of 1.96 against the Pads who are hitting .213 as a team. Pretty sad times when Nick Hundley...
Jonathan Papelbon can be used correctly by the Philadelphia Phillies, and there still can be relief-corps issues that affect the locals. Did what happen in Atlanta over last season impact the Phils? Did it work in favor of or against the red pinstripes?

The Phillies couldn't figure out Matt Garza today. When a pitcher is hot, he is hot. We have seen time and time again Roy Halladay go lights out on opponents. The same thing happened today against the Phillies in the form of Matt Garza.Garza pitched seven innings of one hit ball against a struggling Phillies offense looking to finish April above .500. With this 5-1 loss...
Cole Hamels is SUPPOSED to be one of the top free agents available at the end of this baseball season, but not if the San Diego Padres have anything to say about it. Upon Colbert Hamels' (Colbert!) birth, his mother, an employee of the Padres at the time, signed a LIFETIME contract for a robust $1 with the Padres then-head of marketing Andy Strasberg. Makes that $2M bonus Hamels...
