Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reported today that the Mets are one of five teams waving the white flag. Here is the segment he wrote on the Mets… The Mets’ payroll has dropped roughly $50 million since this time last year. They lost popular shortstop Jose Reyes because they weren’t able to match the Marlins’ offer — a notion that would have seemed absurd two years ago. Sandy Alderson, the general manager, told reporters in December that the franchise had an operating loss of $70 million last year. The Mets are doing business in a manner uncommon for a New York baseball franchise. And with Bernard Madoff litigation still pending, there’s no foreseeable end to the ownership’s cash shortage. Yes, this is a lousy time to be a Mets fan. The Marlins and Nationals did more to upgrade their rosters this offseason, while the Phillies and Braves return most of the players who helped them win 102 and 89 games, respectively. The Mets suffered 85 defeats in 2011 and responded by signing closer ...

NL East: A Fascinating Place: Mets

This is the last post in a series that has looked at the boiler plate that is now the National League East. The series started with a look at the Phillies and determined that, with that pitching rotation, and despite a weaker line up, should be given the nod once again as the favorite to win the division. The next three posts focused on the Braves, Marlins and Nationals and found...

MMO Sunday Flashback: Could Ike Davis Be The Next Darryl Strawberry?

Enjoy this MMO Sunday Flashback by Ed Leyro that was originally posted on April 20th, 2011. You can catch more from Ed on his site, Studious Metsimus.   It seems odd to compare Ike Davis to Darryl Strawberry.  After all, Darryl was the #1 pick in the 1980 amateur draft, took home the Rookie of the Year Award in 1983, and is at or near the top of many of the Mets’ all-time hitting...

What can we expect from Dillon Gee in 2012?

Last year Dillon Gee burst onto the scene like a man possessed.  He hit the ground running and helped keep the Mets stay respectable for the majority of the season until Sandy dealt key pieces at the trade deadline. Aside from R.A. Dickey, Gee was the Mets best starter last season and ended with 13 wins which was the most on the club. What can we realistically expect from him for...

Clubhouse Confidential On Bay’s Struggles

It’s Jason Bay Day on MMO. Okay, just kidding, but check out this video from MLB Network’s Clubhouse Confidential. Host Brian Kenny does a nice job pointing out some revealing stats on Bay. From 2004-2009, Bay posted a .280/.375/.519 slash. From 2010-2011, Bay posted a .251/.337/.386 slash. Look at that drop in slugging percentage! His ground-ball rate has risen...

The Lion (Picard), The Witch (Wilpon) and the Wardrobe (Mets Blogosphere)

I read an interesting article at Baseball Prospectus by Biz of Baseball’s Maury Brown, who sheds new light on some of  complexities regarding the financial turmoil that has engulfed Mets ownership in the aftermath of the Madoff scandal. Interestingly enough, Brown corroborates some of the things I’ve either speculated here on MMO as well as a few things I reported based...

Sandy Alderson On WFAN At 3:00 PM

Mets GM Sandy Alderson will be on WFAN with Mike Francesa at 3:00 PM. Lots of varying opinions on Alderson’s foray into Twitter. Some are getting a kick out of it, some fans feel as though he’s mocking them, and others simply don’t care. Where do you stand? The funniest person on Twitter these days is New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson. His account...

Recap Of Sandy Alderson Interview On WFAN

This afternoon, Sandy Alderson was a guest of Mike Francesa on WFAN and MetsBlog posted a summary recap: Johan Santana will throw off a mound later this week in Port St. Lucie. He feels the current rotation is “pretty solid,” if Santana is healthy. There isn’t anyone on the roster who doesn’t have something to prove. Lucas Duda has big offensive potential. He believes...

The Party Is In Miami

Looks like Will Smith had it right all along when he wrote the hit song some time ago “Welcome to Miami”. The Miami Marlins have made the biggest splashes of the offseason thus far by inking Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle to long term deals. Reyes’ deal is a backloaded contract to ease the transition of payroll down in Miami and to allow more payroll flexibility this winter. There...

A second look at Jon Rauch

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with most of the moves that Sandy Alderson and Co. have made this off-season. Not spending a ton of money (which the team didn’t even have) on a player like Jose Reyes was a hard decision, but it was the right move. Personally, I loved the Angel Pagan for Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez trade and if I were the Mets I probably...
