Just when the jokes about the Yankees being old were, themselves, getting old, the New Yorker has tipped its cap in the best way of all.

The iconic magazine has immortalized the Yankees’ spring plight on one of its painted covers. The faces this time are of the Yankees’ aging core, with Andy Pettitte, Alex Rodriguez, Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Ichiro Suzuki and Mark Teixeira appearing with varying forms of casts, crutches, walkers and a wheelchair.

The artist, Mark Ulriksen, said he wasn’t much of a Yankees fan but knew enough about the sport to realize that it’s not good that the Yankees’ most recognizable faces aren’t quite so young.

“I’m not a Yankees fan per se,” he told the magazine while explaining his painting, called “Hitting Forty,” “but I’m a New Yorker at heart, and I can say that the Yankees are sure old and beat up. In this lineup I put together, I added the ages of all the players and found the average was 40. And 40 in baseball is old.”

Yes it is, Mark.

Alex Rodriguez to Take in Red Sox-Yankees Opener in Person, Participate in Pregame Ceremonies

All spring Alex Rodriguez has been separated from his Yankees teammates, preferring to rehab his hip surgery between New York and his Miami home. Likewise, team management seems to have been just fine with that, keeping perhaps baseball’s biggest distraction away from the team during a tumultuous (read: injury-plagued) Grapefruit League campaign. Well, according to Newsday, Rodriguez...

2013 Yankees considered underdogs to win AL East?

Most, if not all, of the baseball “experts” are giving no credit to the Yankees this season due to amount of injuries the team has sustained not only in Spring Training, but prior to. The Yankees will be without their everyday third baseman, Alex Rodriguez, until at least May. Center fielder Curtis Granderson broke his forearm in his first spring at-bat, and will likely be out...

If you thought you saw Alex Rodriguez wearing his New York Yankees uniform and lurking around the dugout during Monday's Opening Day ceremonies at Yankee Stadium— you are correct. New York Yankees: Top 3 non-baseball reasons Opening Day was awful

I hate to admit this, but 2013 Opening Day at Yankee Stadium was awful. “YANKEES FANS CATCH EARLY TRAIN HOME FROM TODAY’S OPENER” – BustedCoverage.com Forget the 8-2 loss to the Red Sox, and that the Yankees could not muster up a hit after the fifth inning. The only smart thing I did yesterday was exit the game early with the rest of the Stadium because honestly no one could...

Japanese H.S. game goes 50 innings before winner decided

Hard to believe, but Mark Townsend of Yahoo Big League Stew reports that a high school “Rubber Baseball” game in Japan went a full 50 innings, or 5.6 full length games before being decided 3-0 (no scoring the first 49 innings).  The winner was Chukyo High School over Sotoku in the tournament semifinal game. Some of the stats are almost too much to be true.  According to Townsend...

Oakland Raiders fielding oldest roster in NFL

The Raiders spent the offseason loading up on a slew of veteran talent, a calculated effort to inflate their win total. To nobody's surprise, it's subsequently inflated the team's collective age. Report: Sam clears waivers, can join an NFL practice squad

ST. LOUIS — Michael Sam was probably never an ideal fit with the St. Louis Rams and it had absolutely nothing to do with his sexual orientation. They’re just too well-stocked at defensive end, Sam’s position. Sam showed up for his face-to-face exit meeting with coach Jeff Fisher Sunday, a few hours after clearing waivers. He shook hands with two reporters and accepted well...

Jimmy Johnson: Jerry Jones comes off like a rich A-hole

It’s no secret that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and former coach Jimmy Johnson don’t get along. Despite winning several times as head coach, Johnson and Jones parted ways.
