I know this is crazy, and before today I never thought about it, but there was a tweet recently that caught my attention and made me really think.
James Loney is running out to the bullpen to get some work in for his role as the #Dodgers emergency pitcher today
This brought back to light “Oh yeaaah, James Loney was rated higher as a pitcher coming out of high school than a hitter.” This comes out of the Dodgers media guide concerning James Loney:
….on the mound, he (James Loney) was 9-1 with a 1.80 ERA, striking out 106 in 54.0 innings
Yeah, you saw that right, 106 strike-outs in only 54 innings. He wasn’t just a good pitcher, he was dominant and I could understand why. If you’ve ever seen James Loney throw the ball from first, he has a gun. Before becoming the Dodgers regular first baseman they tried to convert him to the outfield and I’m sure part of that was because of his arm.
So, the great idea I have, even though he’s 28, try Loney out as a pitcher. He clearly fails as a hitt...
