Outfielder Scott Hairson has been traded to the Washington Nationals.
The Chicago Cubs sent the 33-year-old and a player to be named later to the Nationals for Ivan Pineyro and a player to be named later.
Hairston was hitting just .172 this season in 52 games for the Cubs but the Nationals hoping that he will serve the team well as a fourth outfielder. Last season Hairston hit 20 home runs.
Over the winter Hairston agreed to a two year contract from the Cubs which pays him $2.5 this season and $2.5 million in 2014.
Pineyro, 21, had made 15 starts at A-ball for the Nationals compiling a 3.24 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 77 2/3 innings of work.

Congrats to Jordan Zimmermann for being named an All-Star for the first time. Unfortunately, MLB.com is selling a "Zimmerman" NL All-Star jersey.
Now, get over to MLB.com and vote for Ian Desmond, please...

So Bryce Harper has accepted an invitation to participate in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star game next week. Raise your hand if you're worried that he'll hurt himself somehow and/or mess up his swing forever!
Oh well, his brother Bryan doesn't seem worried:
Can’t wait to watch Bryce in the HR Derby!! Gonna put on a show for the fans in NYC!! @Nationals @Bharper3407...
Entering Tuesday’s game against the Phillies, Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond was hitless in his last seven at bats. He grounded into a double play in the first inning Tuesday off Cole Hamels and decided he needed a change. He didn’t pick a different bat or pair of batting gloves. It was his chin hair’s fault. Some time between the top of the first and top of the third...
According to this tweet I saw this morning from James Wagner of the Washington Post:
Bryce Harper says he was asked to participate in the home run derby. Hasn’t given answer yet. Wouldn’t tip his hand. Will answer tonight.

I’ve always wanted to see a guy like Adam Dunn in the Home Run Derby, and I’m probably never going to get...
At last, the Washington Nationals' lineup is starting to click. In related news, Davey Johnson's squad is closer to first place than it has been in over six weeks.
Ryan Zimmerman hit a grand slam, Bryce Harper added three hits and two stolen bases, and the Nationals sent the San Diego Padres to their ninth straight loss, 11-7 on Sunday.
Stephen Strasburg (5-6) allowed four...
Everyone knows Bryce Harper wears 34 because Mickey Mantle wore 7, right? (Three plus four equals seven, you see.) Well, what people don’t know is that Harper also ran into the wall at Dodger Stadium two months ago because Babe Ruth did the same thing in Washington, D.C. 79 years ago. (Again, probably.)
Here Babe Ruth is knocked out by collision with Griffith Stadium DC wall, playing...
David Price expressed frustration today via Twitter that Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper, hitherto there seemed to be no rivalry with, was selected to compete in the All-Star Weekend Home Run Derby, rather than Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez. No Pedro Alvarez for #hrderby?? And he’s from NY…Harper is unreal but with 12?! Really?? I love Bryce but Pedro deserves it!...
Bryce Harper is no stranger to home run hitting contests, and now he’ll take aim at the biggest home run contest of all at the All Star Game held at Citi Field.
Harper was selected by David Wright to a team that includes Wright, Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer. Michael Cuddyer? Well why the Hell is he part of the Home Run Derby? He’s boring as a chicken dinner.
Gio Gonzalez has a pretty big set of friends and family, at least, according to the Miami Marlins.
Gonzalez was born and raised in the Miami area and is now a starting pitcher for the Washington Nationals. The Nationals happen to be playing in Miami this weekend, and the Marlins’ marketing department saw an opportunity to push some tickets.
The team is offering a “Gio Gonzalez...
Thanks to Matt Monroe for the screencap! Lannan pitched an excellent game tonight. He went 8 innings with 4 hits, no runs, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Papelbon came in the 9th and gave up 2 hits back to back. He ended up with 2 hits, 2 runs, and 2...
Since manager Davey Johnson decided to flip-flop his batting order, the surging Washington Nationals appear to have found their groove at the plate.
Seeking a fifth straight win, the Nationals may need another big offensive showing in Monday night's opener against the Philadelphia Phillies given the way scheduled starter Dan Haren has struggled.
After his team was limited to...
July has brought unrelenting heat to the District, and the Washington Nationals (46-42) are hoping to bring the heat north, as they ride a season-high four-game winning streak into their face-off with the Philadelphia Phillies (43-46).
The Nationals just completed their first sweep since April 11 over the San Diego Padres, and have gone 5-2 to open the month.
Just a few hours after sweeping the San Diego Padres, the Washington Nationals added a little depth to their bench by trading for right handed hitting outfielder Scott Hairston. As reported by Masn’s Dan Kolko through Ken Rosenthal:
Per @Ken_Rosenthal, the #Nats have acquired OF Scott Hairston from the Cubs for a minor league pitcher. Brings right-handed pop off bench.
John Lannan defeated the Washington Nationals on Monday night. With eight innings of work the 28-year-old led the Phillies to a 3-2 victory.
Lannan went from 2011 Opening Day starter to minor leaguer to free agent this winter.
While Lannan has pitched well against the Nationals in two starts this season he holds a 4.23 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP on the season overall.
