The Washington Nationals overcame a familiar quandary Friday night with an uncommon solution. They faced disaster hit their way out and hung on for dear life. After the Kansas City Royals bludgeoned Gio Gonzalez an offense that had shriveled under most any scenario exploded in dire circumstances. And when an unlikely savior came out of the bullpen and posted five zeros a blowout loss turned narrowly into a small milestone. Their slog of a season has forced the Nationals to amend their goals and they hit one Friday night at Kaufman Stadium with their 11-10 victory. Their fourth straight win which came only after they survived a nightmare ninth inning pushed the Nationals back to .500 for the first time since July 19. It came after a loopy game the Nationals at first refused to give away then in adherence with their ulcer-inducing road trip nearly did at the end. The Nationals remained 8 ½ games out of the second wild spot but another win allowed them to cling to optimism. “We got ...

Meet Dakota Bacus, the Whitewall Ninja

And so, the Nationals traded Kurt Suzuki back to the A's today for 22-year old minor league pitcher Dakota Bacus. Just another minor league pitcher, right? Wrong. Bacus has an alter ego, "The Whitewall Ninja," which he developed during his time with the A's single-A affiliate Beloit Snappers this year. Basically, he tried to hide on the field during games by...

David DeJesus’ wife Kim reacts to trade to Tampa Bay Rays

David DeJesus’ wife Kim was the highlight of the trade deadline this season. The former Chicago Cubs outfielder’s name was the subject of a number of trade rumors on July 31, but he ended up staying put. Or should we say, he ended up staying put for a couple more weeks. Last month, Kim DeJesus […]

DeJesus traded to Tampa Bay

The David DeJesus Era in Washington lasted all of four days. And never even made it to Washington. The Nationals traded DeJesus to the Rays today for a player-to-be-named or cash considerations acquiring and then moving the veteran outfielder in a manner that only a Wall Street day trader could truly appreciate. Monday's acquisition of DeJesus in a waiver-claim trade with the...

Nationals' shaky defense helps Royals win 6-4.

First the Washington Nationals were very bad, giving up four runs in the first inning. Then they were very good, recovering from the big early deficit to forge a 4-4 tie in search of their sixth straight road win. But then they were very bad again, fumbling through a shaky eighth inning Sunday afternoon while giving up two runs and practically handing a 6-4 win to a Kansas City...

Stephen Strasburg, Nationals blow lead in ninth, rally to beat Cubs, 5-4, in 13 innings

Stephen Strasburg was stunned. He crouched next to the mound. He stared back at the left field bleachers where Donnie Murphy’s game-tying two-run home run had just landed. Strasburg was two strikes away from firing his second complete game in three starts. Instead he hung a 1-1 curveball to Murphy who deposited the pitch into the glove of a Cubs fan in the first row of the stands...

Nationals hang on to beat Royals

On a night when just about everybody who stepped onto the mound at Kauffman Stadium saw their pitches rocketing toward the outfield, the Nationals' Tanner Roark proved to be the exception. The rookie reliever shut down the Kansas City Royals over the critical middle innings Friday night, emboldening his team after it rallied from a six-run hole. Jayson Werth's two-run homer...

Report: Athletics have acquired Kurt Suzuki from Nationals

With John Jaso on the disable list, we discussed the likelihood of the Oakland Athletics pulling the trigger and making a deal for another catcher.  We never would have guessed they would have acquired a familiar face.  Late last night, news began to trickle in that the A's were working on a deal with the Washington Nationals to acquire Kurt Suzuki.  That deal appears to...

Nationals 5, Cubs 4(13)

Denard Span scored the go-ahead run on pinch-hitter Chad Tracy's grounder in the 13th inning, and the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4 on Thursday after Stephen Strasburg blew a three-run lead in the ninth. Span doubled leading off the 13th against Michael Bowden (1-3). He moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Lombardozzi and came around on Tracy's roller to...

David DeJesus goes to Rays in his second trade this week

After bouncing from Chicago to Washington to Tampa Bay during the past week, David DeJesus can probably unpack his suitcase for the rest of the season. But you can't blame the guy if he doesn't settle in and get comfortable in his new surroundings just yet. He might still nervously eye the calendar until the waiver trade deadline of Aug. 31 passes.  DeJesus' extended...

Kansas City's playoff hopes took another hit after Conor...
