The MLB trade deadline always generates much fanfare as teams try to shore up some roster holes for the stretch run, or sell off some pieces to begin a rebuilding process. While the non-waiver deadline passed on July 31, teams can still make trades, provided the player(s) in question clears waivers. Essentially, if a team wishes to trade a player after July 31, they place him on waivers, and each team has a chance to claim him, in reverse order of the standings. Once he is claimed, the original team can pull him back, and retain him, or a deal can be worked out with the team whose claim was granted, and he moves to his new club. On Monday, the Washington Nationals claimed OF David DeJesus from the Cubs, and acquired him for a player to be named later. Then, things got interesting. First of all, this deal didn’t make much sense to begin with. The Nationals, at the time of the trade, were 15.5 games back in the NL East, and 9.5 games out of the last Wild Card spot, so acquiring DeJesus doesn’t seem to fill a pressing need.
