Found December 23, 2013 on The Outside Corner:
After Shin-Soo Choo signed with the Rangers on Saturday, there's just one free agent outfielder unsigned out of our top ten - Nelson Cruz, last of those same Texas Rangers. And keep in mind, that top ten list isn't filled with players like Jacoby Ellsbury and Choo - guys like Corey Hart, Michael Morse, Jason Kubel, and Nate McLouth were on the list. If there's a team out there that wants a legitimate outfield option, they really have two choices - forfeit a draft pick and sign Cruz, or dump some prospects onto a team in an attempt to acquire someone like Domonic Brown, Josh Willingham, Yoenis Cespedes, Andre Ethier, or Matt Kemp. Compared to the cost in prospects and/or contracts already in place, doesn't giving up a draft pick and giving Cruz something like four years and $60 million sound pretty damn good? Now lets be honest: Cruz is obviously not in the same class as Choo, or Ellsbury. He's a 33-year old with old player skills - poor defense, an abov...

How the Rangers' signing of Shin-Soo Choo impacts the Dodgers

To be honest, not a whole lot. The last thing the Dodgers needed was another outfielder, unless said outfielder were named Giancarlo Stanton or Mike Trout. But the impact of Shin-Soo Choo's signing with the Rangers (7 years, $130 million, dayum) might be felt the rest of the winter. While the Dodgers are insistent on the idea of not trading an outfielder (even though they...

What Does the Shin-Soo Choo Signing Mean?

Shin-Soo Choo Signing Reflects Rangers’ Win-Now Mentality and Other Thoughts on Outfielder’s New Deal

The Rangers have made clear this offseason that they’re prepared to do — and spend — whatever it takes to bring a championship to Arlington. It could either be a major success or a flop of epic proportions. The Rangers’ latest Texas-sized expenditure involves giving outfielder Shin-Soo Choo a reported $130 million over the next seven seasons. It’s a lot of dough, especially...

The Free Agent Market Shifts to Pitching

With Shin-Soo Choo now going to the Rangers, the top of the remaining free agent market shifts to pitching. The most coveted starting pitcher on the market this year, Japanese sensation Masahiro Tanaka, may or may not be posted by the Rakuten Golden Eagles. The possibility still exists that he may be posted prior to spring training, but the date has already passed when most of the...

Spending $130 Million Well and Less Well

On Saturday, the Rangers agreed to sign Shin-Soo Choo to a seven year, $130 million contract. With Nelson Cruz and David Murphy departing via free agency and Craig Gentry traded to Oakland, they had a gaping hole in their outfield, and they signed the best outfielder left on the market. Given their position on the win curve, maximizing their 2014 roster potential is an understandable...

WSD’s Epic Fail Facebook Comments of the Week

Y’know, I wasn’t gonna do this, but after scouring the Facebooks I think I’ve amassed a good list of comments to poke fun at.  Rather than plow through them all, let’s focus on two.  The names have been removed to protect the innocent. Let’s start with this one: Shin-Soo Choo BA .285 in 2013 for the Reds with 21 HR & 54 RBIs. signed with the Rangers for $18.6M a...

Rosenthal: Rangers may be lefty-heavy now, but they're still stacked

If you want to nitpick the Rangers after their seven-year, $130 million agreement with free-agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, you can argue that they lack right-handed power.

Reds GM: Billy Hamilton’s the guy

The deal Shin-Soo Choo agreed to Saturday — reportedly seven years, $130 million with the Texas Rangers — tells you why the Reds were never serious contenders to re-sign him. “We knew that we didn’t have a chance if he got when I thought he was going to get,” Reds Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. The Reds met with Choo’s agent, Scott Boras, at the Winter Meetings...

Billy Hamilton at leadoff, center makes sense for Reds

The best thing you can say about putting Billy Hamilton No. 1 on the depth chart in center field and the leadoff spot? It makes a whole lot more sense than signing Shin-Soo Choo to a seven-year, $130 million deal. That’s what Choo reportedly agreed to Saturday with the Texas Rangers. The move made Choo’s departure from the Reds all but official. He has to pass a physical before...
