In yet another sign of the bungled management that leads the New York Mets, the closing ceremonies to Shea Stadium turned out to be more like a funeral than a celebration. Why, you ask. Well, once again the people in the front office made the BRUTAL decision to have the big gala AFTER the game, rather than before the first pitch. Didn't anyone have the foresight to think that the life would be sucked out of the stadium if the Mets somehow lost with their season on the brink? And maybe, just maybe, a pregame ceremony might've created an extra buzz in the crowd ? one that could've remedied the anxious butterflies that existed in the stomach of every Mets fan on Sunday. The players sure could've used it considering they pounded out a whopping four hits with their backs against the wall. Yes, the Mets have pulled off two consecutive September collapses on the field like no other, but when I look at how management continually butchers things off of it, I can't help but think of ownership as a symbol of the franchise's failures. Back in June when Willie Randolph was canned, I applauded the move but slammed the front office for the way it was handled. Willie needed to go, but Omar Minaya allowing his manager to fly out west only to hand him his pink slip in the wee hours after a win was abhorrent. This team just cannot get it right when it comes to big decisions. How comical was it in 2006 when the team's brand new flagship network experienced technical difficulties on Opening Day and lost the game for 20 minutes!! Only the Mets, my friends.
