Derek Jeter (Photo Credit: Elsa/Getty Images) After playing a mere game for the New York Yankees this season, Derek Jeter has once again found himself on the disabled list. The Bronx Bombers placed the 39-year-old shortstop on the 15 day DL. Such a move comes from Jeter suffering a right quad strain in his season debut July 11 in an 8-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Jeter got an infield single on the first pitch of the game, scored a run and drove in a run as the Yanks’ designated hitter, but he was taken out of the game and pinch hit for in the bottom of the 8th. He did not take the field in the final three games before the All Star break against the Minnesota Twins, who took the final two games from New York. However, unlike earlier, it’s not as bad for Jeter and the Yankees. He is available to return to the team when they host the Tampa Bay Rays July 27. As a result of them placing him on the DL, they signed Brent Lillibridge to a major-league contract to take his place on 25-man roster. The 29-year-old infielder appeared in 9 games for the Chicago Cubs, collecting just 1 hit, 2 RBI and struck out 9 times. The team is set to welcome back third baseman Alex Rodriguez on Monday. A-Rod has not played this season, but has not been out of the headlines. His name was linked to a Miami clinic performance enhancing drug scandal. As for this weekend, the team turns their attention to its number one rival: The Boston Red Sox. The Sox are currently 6 games up on the Yanks at 58-39 for first place in the AL East and set a new franchise record for most wins before the All Star break. The 51-44 Yanks, however, hope to gain ground by sweeping them. They are 3 games back from a wild card spot and send Andy Pettitte to the hill at Fenway Park on Friday. The 41-year-old lefty 7-6 with a 92 ERA+ and 1.373 WHIP this season. He has allowed early runs in six consecutive starts and will need to be on his A game against a dangerous Red Sox offense.
