Reports are breaking in Chicago that the White Sox have started purging veterans.
While the details are still coming out, it appears the Sox have traded designated hitter Jim Thome to the Los Angeles Dodgers and pitcher Jose Contreras to the Colorado Rockies.
The Dodgers have also acquired former White Sox pitcher Jon Garland late Monday night.
Where, and how, Thome will fit in with the Dodgers has to be a huge question mark. They currently have emerging young stud James Loney at first base, and, being in the National League, can't use Thome as a designated hitter.
Contreras, meanwhile, brings a veteran arm to a Rockies team currently tied for the lead in the National League Wild Card race.
Reports earlier Monday were that Sox General Manager Kenny Williams emailed a memo to fellow GMs saying any of the Sox players in the final year of their contract were available for trade before the midnight Eastern trade deadline. That list included Thome, Contreras, Jermaine Dye, Scott...
