According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the trade buzz surrounding starting pitcher Jon Niese is getting louder and that at least 3 or 4 teams are currently interested in acquiring the young southpaw from the Mets. “If the package is right, the Mets will deal him,” writes Heyman. The Mets are believed to be looking for a young pitcher (like Niese?) and a catching prospect in return. If the Mets have a price established for Niese, it means he’s on the block. This goes beyond the old adage of “nobody should be untouchable”, although it seems David Wright certainly is for now. Last week, Joel Sherman of the New York Post mentioned the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox as teams that would certainly be in the hunt for Jon Niese. My question is this: If you are serious in your assertion that you are working toward building a relevant team in 2014, why would you trade such a promising left-handed starter who will be just 27-years old and entering his prime years by that ...

Rumors: Mets will trade Niese if the package is right

Last week we heard that Mets starter Jonathon Niese had hit the trading block and that the Yankees were interested in him. The latest is that there are no “significant” trade talks involving Niese at the moment, but the Mets will deal him if the package is right, according to Adam Rubin and Jon Heyman. Heyman added that there are at least three to four teams still interested...

Mets talk with Jays, but Sandy says Niese is in his plans

Tuesday on Twitter, CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman said at least three or four teams are still interested in acquiring Jon Niese from the Mets. However, later in the day, according to ESPN New York, Sandy Alderson said Niese is in his plans for next year. Alderson acknowledged that he will listen to offers for any player, but, “at this point that’s all it is, is talk,”...

Mets To Make Move On Ronny Paulino Today

The Mets must make a decision as to whether to tender catcher Ronny Paulino a contract by today's non-tender deadline. As we reported back on November 28th, the Mets are quite displeased with Paulino's poor work ethic and lack of preparation, along with his laziness. If the Mets non-tender Paulino, the Mets catching tandem would most likely be Mike Nickeas and Josh Thole...

MMO Mets Top 20 Prospects – #4 Jenrry Mejia, RHP

When the Mets signed RHP Jenrry Mejia as an IFA out of the Dominican Republic, in 2007, they knew they were getting a diminutive 17-year-old, with an electric fastball. He was brought along slowly with his innings pitched, so as not to damage this tender young thoroughbred. He needed to be babied, while his body filled out, not rushed as was the custom for the Tony Bernazard led...

Decisions on Pelfrey, Acosta & Paulino will be tonight

Tonight is the deadline for teams to decide whether to cut or keep arbitration-eligible players for next season. If the player is non-tendered, he becomes a free agent. If he is tendered a deal, it is essentially a guaranteed one-year contract. However, if he and the team cannot reach agreement on a salary, the player can choose to have that number determined by an arbitrator...

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About How Spectacularly Broke The Mets (And Their Owners) Are

Dan Lewis at Amazin' Avenue makes sense of the Mets' finances so you don't have to. Essentially, they're ****** independent of Bernie Madoff, and everything the team could conceivably sell is mortgaged. Makes you yearn for a couple months ago, when the team was a fuzz less ******, but still ******. [READ »]More »

Mets owners take out $40M loan

The owners of the cash-strapped New York Mets have taken a $40 million bank loan while they try to sell minority stakes in the team. A Mets spokesman confirmed yesterday that a single major bank extended it the “bridge” loan in the last month or two. In November 2010, the...

Bank Whores

Of course, good news like Ronny Paulino being gone ... minuscule good news that it is ... is trumped by more news from the financial sector: The owners of the Mets, needing cash and unable to turn to Major League Baseball for more financial help, received a $40 million loan from a major bank in the past six weeks. The team described the arrangement as a bridge loan, meant to aid...
