Found December 30, 2011 on Faith and Fear:
I don’t think the 2012 Mets will be as bad as most people seem to think … but that’s not the same thing as thinking the 2012 Mets will actually be good. I’ll think they’ll be mediocre, with a relatively robust offense but too many No. 4 starters in the rotation and too many improved teams in the National League East. And like a lot of mediocre teams, I think we’ll only be able to take their measure a few years further down the road. Looking back from the vantage point of, say, 2015, the 2012 Mets might strike us as a team that was beginning to benefit from the sounder foundation built by Sandy Alderson and Co. in preparation for the Wilpons’ return to financial health and the blossoming of the farm system. Or they might strike us as a pointless way station before the last of Omar Minaya’s contracts ran out, Alderson and his team escaped and the Mets took up residence in the cellar as the Pirates East, with fans pleading for Bud Selig t...

New York Mets 2011 Year In Review

As the year comes to a close I think its safe to say that 2011, much like the four years before it, will go down in the history books as a year most Mets fans would like to forget. The Mets entered the year in the midst of a total front office overhaul. New general manager, Sandy Alderson, hired Terry Collins to lead a relatively unchanged roster into the year surrounded by questions...

Wilmer Flores might want to forget about 2011

In a post to Baseball Prospectus, Kevin Goldstein takes a look at 10 of the league’s better prospects who might want to forget about 2011. For instance, he writes the following about 20-year-old Mets SS Wilmer Flores: “Flores has long been seen as one of the Mets’ top prospects, but that’s mostly been because of his age and level. In 2011, he proved to still be...

Ruben Tejada: Rey Ordonez or Something Even Better?

No matter how old some of the readers here are – young or old will surely remember the “Gloved One”, Rey Ordonez. Known for his defensive wizardy at shortstop, Rey-Rey debuted with the Mets in 1996 and was the Mets’ starting shortstop for the next seven seasons. He was a key component to what Sports Illustrated tabbed “The Best Infield Ever”. The...

New York Mets to Eliminate A Minor League Affiliate

In an effort to save some money, the New York Mets are going to eliminate their Gulf Coast League affiliate. According to General Manager Sandy Alderson, the New York Mets lost $70 million last season. I’m assuming he’s referring to losing that money as a result of the St. Lucie Mets’ operations. That does seem awfully high for a rookie level affiliate that only...

New York Mets’ R.A. Dickey to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro would be a pretty damn cool thing to add to your life resume.  There aren’t many people who would even be willing to follow through with a challenge of that magnitude – let alone be able to physically accomplish it.  With that said, R.A. Dickey’s journey up that mountain will not directly lead to more tallies in the win column for the...

Thank You, Happy New Year & Let’s Go Mets

As I’ve said before, what sustains me in writing MetsBlog.com is knowing you and I essentially agree on the same thing: we want the Mets to win. Sure, we may disagree on the best ways for them to do this, but we all agree on the goal. I started MetsBlog.com in 2003 as an out-of-market Mets fan going to school in Washington, DC. It was a project for college, but it also was...

Top Ten Mets Headlines Of 2011

Good afternoon all. Just got back from Ohio and visiting with my family over Christmas. There was time to reflect on the year, which, of course, includes the Mets’ third straight losing season. The year was the first under the Sandy Alderson-Terry Collins regime, which was supposed to represent a change in the franchise’s culture and downward spiral. It did not. There were seemingly...

MMO Exclusive Interview: Mets Prospect Scott Moviel, RHP

I got a chance to talk with Mets right-hander Scott Moviel just after Christmas and he was nice enough to bring us up-to-date as far as his progress in 2011. Before last season Scott was battling knee troubles which can be problematic for a pitcher who stands 6’11″. Now healthy once again, he provides us with some very interesting insights on the challenges he is taking...

Mets interested in INF Ryan Theriot

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, The Mets are interested in Ryan Theriot. I posted in early December that I thought Theriot would be a good investment for the Mets after the demise of Jose Reyes. Theriot has played most of the infield and even the outfield in the past.. Want a Team Flag from 2006?

I was in a Modell’s in Kearny, NJ last week when something caught my eye: If that slogan sounds familiar to you, then you remember the 2006 slogan! That was the year of, “the team, the time, the New York Mets”. For some reason this store had a boatload of these flags. I thought about [...]

RANTS AND RAVES

Time for a stream of semi-consciousness not all of it Mets related : I’m as upset as most Mets fans with the inactivity so far by the front office in procurement of players but when you look at the list of free agents still available I’m hoping its Sandy Alderson playing the supply and demand game and not the We’re broke game.  There are still some good players and some serviceable...
