Now that the season is over for the Oakland Athletics, it is time to recuperate. A few of the Athletics acquired some injuries just before or during the postseason. Even though most of these injuries are not too serious, it is definitely troubling that they will have to have surgery to fix these problems. Sonny Gray During game five of the ALDS, rookie pitcher Sonny Gray injured his thumb when Detroit Tiger Prince Fielder hit a line drive directly at Gray. Gray fielded the comebacker awkwardly and many thought he had ultimately broken his thumb. As it turns out, Gray tore a ligament in his left left thumb and will need surgery. He saw a specialist last week and will mostly likely have surgery soon. Even though this injury requires surgery, the torn ligament is not in this pitching hand. Gray should be back on the mound for spring training in 2014. Josh Reddick will also need to have surgery on his right wrist during the offseason. Reddick’s wrist has been a constant problem since April of the 2013 season when he collided with a wall in Houston. He was placed on the disabled list twice during the season due to his sprained wrist, and this injury contributed to his lack of success this season. Riddick hit .226 AVG with only 12 home runs. Reddick is going to consult with a hand specialist in Newton, MA who performed surgery on Reddick’s left wrist in 2011. Hopefully his injury will be resolved by the time spring training rolls around. Even though pitcher Jarrod Parker does not need surgery, he does need rest. Right before the postseason began, Parker was dealing with a troubled right elbow. After an MRI, it was pronounced that he  had a right forearm strain and will not need surgery. John Jaso, who ended his season with a concussion at the end of July, was hitting in the minors toward the tail end of September. He did have to see a specialist in Pittsburgh, PA in August due to still having concussion symptoms, but he is slowly working baseball back into his routine. Jaso should be fine by the spring. Even though nothing is certain about who will go and who will stay with the Athletics for 2014, we all hope that these players can recover and will be healthy for the 2014 season.
