Just a quick note — via Ken Rosenthal, the Giants have expressed interest in bringing back Mark DeRosa. There isn’t much to expect from him at this point. Projections are hardly a be-all and end-all, but I think the ZiPS projection for DeRosa in 2012 tells the whole story: .244/.300/.277. He’ll probably get a minor-league contract with an invite to Spring Training...

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says he spoke with Pablo Sandoval‘s agent Ryan Morgan. Morgan tells Baggarly that he has had very broad discussions with Giants VP Bobby Evans about a contract. Sandoval’s camp is open to a multi-year contract.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says the San Francisco Giants are trying to trade Jeremy Affeldt and/or Ramon Ramirez.
The Giants recently picked up Affeldt’s option for $5 million. Ramirez is in his final year of being arbitration eligible and will be getting a raise from his 2011 salary ($1.6 million). Ramirez will get around $2.5 to $3 million in 2012.

Lofgren is now taking the Rick Ankiel path to the majors.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, Giants minor league pitcher Chuck Lofgren will be stepping up to the plate again. The former national pitching prospect will make the switch from pitcher to hitter.
Lofgren has spent the past seven years in the minors.

I don’t even know what to say. The Giants are spending little money this offseason, but decided to commit ~$10MM to two lefty relievers. When they re-signed Javier Lopez and exercised Jeremy Affeldt‘s option, I thought it was a bit excessive and unnecessary. Apparently the Giants took a month to realize that, and are now trying to clear up some of the money they have...
