A Brief History of Angelic AcesFor most of the franchise’s 51-year history, the Angels have had a clear staff ace—a pitcher who, if not always one of the best in the league, was clearly the top pitcher on the team. During the first half of the 60s it was Dean Chance who, while only playing a bit over five years for the Angels from his first five games in 1961 through 1966, compiled a 2.83 ERA during that span and a Cy Young Award in 1964 when he led the AL with 20 wins, a 1.65 ERA, 278.1 innings, and 11 shutouts.
After Chance was traded to the Twins after the 1966 season for a couple of power hitters, a couple years passed before Andy Messersmith emerged as the ace in 1969 and pitched for the Angels through 1972, the staff being co-led by Clyde Wright who he broke out as a strong starter in 1970 at the age of 29. It was before that year during the offseason that the Angels traded aging star shortstop Jim Fregosi to the New York Mets for...

Bobby Abreu: Mr. Clutch 2011
Yes, you read the title correctly. Bobby Abreu of the Los Angeles Angeles was Mr. Clutch during the 2011 season. He ended the season with the highest clutch rating in the majors, as measured here at FanGraphs.
I stumbled across this nugget while writing this Thanksgiving-themed post for our friends at Baseball Nation. I was hunting for players who’d accomplished little-noticed...
Arte Moreno Learning That Silence Is Golden
This has been a big off-season thus far for Arte Moreno. Despite being 65 years old, he seems to be learning more and more as each day goes by.
First, he learned what we already all knew, that Tony Reagins is an idiot and then fired Reagins for said idiocy.
Next, he showed a surprising newfound understanding that the status quo is NOT good enough anymore for the Angels and replaced...
Offseason Primer - Part 7: The Bullpen
By Jonathan Northrop - Angelswin.com Columnist…which brings us to the last part of this Offseason Primer: the bullpen. But never fear, my faithful readers, because--considering that these articles became longer than I expected (I couldn’t help diving into the history of the team)--I will write an eighth part as summation, looking in particular at the Angels right now and what...
Tigers Interested In Maicer Izturis
The Tigers have interest in trading for Maicer Izturis of the Angels, reports Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Izturis is believed to be next on their wishlist after Martin Prado of the Braves.
The Tigers are looking for upgrades at second base, third base, and in the leadoff spot, three roles Izturis has filled at different times in his career. The 31-year-old...
Agent: Angels One Of 4-5 Teams With Serious Interest In Aramis
The Angels are one of five or five teams with "serious interest" in free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez, agent Paul Kinzer told Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times. DiGiovanna notes that earlier this month Angels GM Jerry Dipoto described his interest level in Ramirez as "lower, but I never close the door on anyone."
Ramirez is open to playing on the West...
Numbers say Halos struggle to 'create' runs
According to the machinery that churns out "runs created," one of the popular categories in baseball's stat age, the Angels' most productive offensive player in 2011 was ... Bobby Abreu?
