The San Diego Padres are close to a one-year agreement with free agent right-handed starting pitcher Jason Marquis, ESPN.com reported Monday. Marquis, 34, is coming off a rough season that ended Aug. 21 with a broken left hand when it was hit by a line drive. He pitched well by winning five of eight starts for the Padres after the All-Star break before the injury. He was released by the Minnesota Twins earlier in the season. He went 8-11 with a 5.22 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 22 starts overall last year. Marquis has played for eight teams in his 13-year career. The Padres are hoping to add pitching depth to their roster, including retaining Marquis.
