RHP Dale Thayer picked up his second save in as many nights Tuesday, raising his career total to three. Thayer has yet to allow a run in six appearances and gave up his first three hits as a Padre Tuesday night. One of those hits struck a runner. Thayer struck out Carlos Gonzalez with the tying runs on to end the game. RF Will Venable scored the Padres' first run after tripling and drove in the second run with a double. For Venable, it was his first two-hit game since April 18. He has, however, hit safely in 20 of his last 22 starts, going 23-for-84 (.274). LHP Alex Hinshaw, 29, joined the Padres Tuesday as an eighth relief pitcher in the bullpen. He was promoted from Class AAA Tucson, where he had appeared in 14 games with a 3.72 earned run average over 19 13 innings. He had 18 strikeouts and a .206 opponents' batting average, although he issued 10 walks and hit two batters. Hinshaw was 2-1 with a 3.40 ERA in 48 games with the Giants in 2008 at the age of 25. But he spent most of the last three seasons in the minor leagues. Hinshaw has a 94-mph fastball and a hard slider. RHP Micah Owings was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list to create a spot for LHP Alex Hinshaw on the 40-man roster. Owings, 29, appeared in six of the Padres' first 19 games when he went on the 15-day disabled list April 26 with a right forearm strain. Little was said about Owings' status until the decision was made to transfer him to the 60-day disabled list meaning he will be out until at least June 26 and the season's 72nd game. 1B Yonder Alonso drove in the Padres' first run Tuesday with a first-inning single, giving him three RBI in two games after having just four in the season's first 29 games. Alonso has hit in six straight games and 11 of his last 12 (18-for-46, .391). BY THE NUMBERS: 7 23 Scoreless innings worked by the Padres bullpen Monday and Tuesday in 3-2 and 3-1 wins over the Rockies at Petco Park. QUOTE TO NOTE: "We've seen him and we've liked what we've seen. He came to the Giants quick. He pitched well this spring. The arm is there. The stuff is there. He has to get the ball consistently in the zone." Padres manager Bud Black, on LHP Alex Hinshaw.
