It is a very good thing that I already have a college degree. Because this Phillies season is giving me many compelling reasons to hate math, which is generally not a good thing where school is concerned. If I had to walk into a calculus class right now, I may run screaming from the room instead. Call it a math hangover. Or just call it the 2013 Phillies season, which has been a statistical nightmare. For example, let us discuss OBP. It is really too bad that the on-base percentage statistic does not include how many times a player wiped himself and others off the bases after getting on. If it did, Michael Young’s .355 OBP would not look so great. Young has hit into 13 double plays in 57 games. He has more double play balls than he has RBI’s (11) even though his .355 OBP leads all starters on the team. This is a frightening statistic. Did you also know that Ryan Howard, making $20 million this year, has hit only 1 home run in his last 103 plate appearances? With 7 homers total on t...

Zambrano Nearing – Is He The Best Option?

The big Phillies news this morning was that Carlos Zambrano will be headed to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to pitch against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders on Thursday night. Zambrano has pitched well against Minor League opponents (16.1 IP, 10 H, 1 ER, 12 K, 7 BB per Matt Provence) and reiterated his readiness to pitch for the Phillies after his weekend start with the Fightins. “I’m...

Catching Carousel Stops: Rupp to AAA, Dalles to AA

Rupp gets the call to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Photo by: Jay Floyd According to Reading Fightins Director of Public Relations Eric Scarcella, the Phillies have done some reorganizing in their minor league ranks to adjust for Steven Lerud‘s promotion to the Phillies. Catcher Cameron Rupp, 24, has been promoted from Double-A Reading to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Rupp, 6’1″ and 240...

Phillies Draft Notes: Familiar Names, Family Ties, Football Stars & Offense

Offense was the primary focus early in this year’s draft for the Phillies.  With their each of their first five selections and eight of 11 picks to start the draft focused on position players, the Phillies seem to be realizing that the core of home grown talent that helped the team achieve all of their success in recent years is aging and the time has come to focus on filling...

Pettibone Struggles; Phillies Lose Series

The Phillies were blown out by the Brewers, 9-1. The Brewers took the series 3-1. Rough Second Inning for Pettibone The Brewers put up a four-spot in the second inning against Jonathan Pettibone. Pettibone made a fielding error to begin the inning. He then proceeded to give up a single and hit a batter. The mistakes proved costly, as the inning was capped off by Scooter Gennett’s...

What does Sunday's game say about the character of the Phillies?

Sunday was a tough day for Phillies fans who still want to believe this team has a chance. Even worse than losing three of four to a last place team and dropping to 2 games under .500 was how the Phillies appeared to lay down on Sunday. After allowing four runs in the third inning to fall behind 4-0, Jonathan Pettibone worked a 7 pitch walk. The Phillies would see seven pitches...

Believe in the Phillies- Loco en la Cabeza

*After Thursday's win, the Phillies finally had a winning record.  However, they promptly lost the last two nights to the lowly Brewers.  Once again, I feel the need to point out to people that "believe" in this team, that they are loco en la cabeza.  Milwaukee has one of the worst pitching staffs in all of baseball, yet the Phils offense make them look passable...

Target Field full of good memories for Ben Revere

MINNEAPOLIS The list of highlight reel catches that Ben Revere made in 133 games at Target Field is a long one. For most fans, it might be tough to pick a favorite. The former Twin has one in mind, though. He refers to it only as "the one I made in 2011." He made several plays that year, but the one that Revere recalls fondest came back on Aug. 22, 2011 when he robbed...

Offense Fails Phils, Hamels Yet Again in Minnesota

Hamels was solid, but not good enough on Tuesday behind an anemic offensive effort. (Photo: AP) It took the Phillies offense eight innings to get two hits in one frame on Tuesday night.  Ryan Howard’s two-out eighth inning single tied the score at two.  It took their bullpen only five batters to give it right back, as a Justin Morneau single off Antonio Bastardo in the eighth...

Phillies rumors: Philadelphia becoming buyers?

You knew this was going to happen. Last week everyone was talking about the Philadelphia Phillies selling off their veteran assets with an eye to the future. Now, after a winning streak – five consecutive wins against the cellar-dwelling Miami Marlins and Milwaukee Brewers – there is once again talk that the Phillies could look to add to their veteran-laden roster for a...

Rupp surprised by promotion to Lehigh Valley

An injury to Erik Kratz at the Triple-A level started the dominoes falling. One of those dominoes became 24-year old Cameron Rupp, who was promoted from Reading to Lehigh Valley to take over the catching duties at Triple-A.

Gameday: Phillies (31-33) vs. Twins (27-33)

Philadelphia Phillies (21-23) vs. Minnesota Twins (27-33) LHP Cole Hamels (2-9, 4.56 ERA) v. RHP P.J. Walters (2-1, 3.00 ERA) TIME: 8:10, Target Field TV: Comcast SportsNet Weather: 78, broken clouds Media: Twitter and Facebook For the optimistic Phils fan, watching this team in 2013 has been torturous.  The Phillies were unable to put together anything more than a three...

Ruben are we going to do this again?

In recent days there has been much talk about Cliff Lee and possible trade rumors. With the Phillies hovering around the .500 mark with wins and losses, the offense being hot and cold and the starting pitching being in confusion questions arise as to what direction the team is to take now. In the winter of 2009, Ruben Amaro made a three way deal which evolved the Seattle Mariners...

Phillies Lose 9-1, And That's About It

It seems to be the theme of this year's Phillies squad: Get back to a .500 record. Once again, Jonathan Pettibone and the boys in red went into today's action eyeing an even win-loss total. On the mound for the Brewers was former Phillies Kyle Lohse, whose 1-6 record and...

Brown’s Heroics Not Enough as Phils Fall to Milwaukee

The Phillies were coming off a loss for the first time all week Saturday night and looked to get back to .500 against the Brewers in Milwaukee. Kyle Kendrick, one of the more consistent starters in 2013 got the call for Philadelphia, opposed by the Milwaukee bullpen. Yes you read that right, the Brewers countered [...]

Phillies-Twins Preview

The Philadelphia Phillies have hit a rough spot after their best stretch of the season. So have the Minnesota Twins. Cole Hamels will try to build on his first victory in more than five weeks Tuesday night when the Phillies and Twins open their three-game series in Minneapolis. After a five-game winning streak helped the club move above .500 for the first time in 2013, Philadelphia...
