Final: Phillies 5, Mets 6. Screen shot 2012-07-05 at 8.48.35 PM

WP: Bobby Parnell (2-1, 2.91 ERA)

LP: Jonathan Papelbon (2-3, 3.45 ERA)

In order for the Philadelphia Phillies to climb out of the hole in the standings that they have dug themselves into, they must start to win as many series as possible in the final remaining months of the season. Tonight, unfortunately, they were not able to do just that.

Cole Hamels lasted seven innings, giving up four runs while striking out seven.  With the lead in the 9th, Papelbon blew just his second save of the season.

The team travels back home to face the Atlanta Braves for the final series prior to the All-Star break.

Attendance: 28,409

Notes:
  • Jimmy Rollins was a home run short of the cycle.  He went 3-3 tonight with two walks, two RBIs, and one run scored.
  • Via Kevin Cooney: "Tonight is third time that R.A. Dickey has faced a team for 2nd time this year. In those three games, his ERA is now 8.27"
  • Ruben Amaro Jr.: "We plan on being contenders in ’13, ’14, ’15 and ’16. So we’re not blowing this team up. That’s not going to happen, regardless of what happens over the next couple of weeks. We plan on being contenders for the next several years, even if we don’t get to the finish line this year. We’d still view ourselves as contenders. It’s more about retooling than it is redoing. We’ve got a lot of players who are pretty damn good. I expect them to be playing next year for us."
  • Ryan Howard will be reevaluated Friday by doctors. Charlie Manuel did not rule out a weekend return against the division-rival Atlanta Braves.

Howard will be eased back into Phillies' lineup

After his first night back in the major leagues after suffering a ruptured left Achilles tendon in last year's National League playoffs, Ryan Howard looked out at the bevy of reporters that surrounded him. He was eventually asked about how much of the load he could shoulder for a Philadelphia Phillies team on the brink of collapse. "Nothing more than this bookbag on...

Howard Activated From DL

(AP) The Big Piece is back. Following last night’s suggestion from Ruben Amaro that he could be in the lineup tonight, the Phillies made good on their word when they activated Ryan Howard from the disabled list today. Hector Luna has been sent to Lehigh Valley to make room on the 25-man roster. Howard, who was recovering from the torn Achilles he suffered during game...

Phillies activate Ryan Howard from DL

The time for excuses is coming to a close. Chase Utley came off of the DL last week, and today, the Phillies have activated first baseman Ryan Howard. Howard torn his Achilles tendon last October in game five of the NLDS against the Cardinals, and played six rehab games, tallying eight hits, two doubles, one homer, three walks, and three strikeouts.  The Phillies...

Philadelphia Phillies: 2012 ERA for the MLB 5 at game 85

Kyle Kendrick of the Philadelphia Phillies is an emergency option.  How do the fill-ins for the Yankees match-up with the locals?  The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my recent coverage linked below. TAL’S HANDY STATS   WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I am alternating a game-day 2012 ERA For The NL East and a 2012 ERA For The MLB 5. See link section below. In each publication, the number...

Assessing the Moves Amaro Didn’t Make

I love trade talk and speculation. My favorite point of the baseball season has been the run-up to the trade deadline and, for Phillies fans, it has been amongst the most exciting in recent years. Ryan and Corey have drawn their lines in the sand about where to stand with Cole Hamels: Corey says it’s imperative to trade Hamels, Ryan to stand pat. Either way, I love reading the...

Utley, Chooch Helps Lee Get His First Win of the Season

Happy July 4th!!! Did Cliff Lee win a game yet? Is he hurt? It is basically the story of the first half. We all know that Cliff Lee has not been the Lee we saw last season. Phillies have been 7-1 since 2004 on July 4th including two walk offs against the Mets. Cliff Lee and Chris Young were throwing zeros until the fourth inning. Scott Hairston put the Mets ahead with a solo...

To trade Cole Hamels or not?

The Phillies may have picked up a big win keyed by a late-inning scoring outburst against the New York Mets, but the five-time reigning NL East champions remain 14 games back in the loss column against the Washington Nationals with a record of 36-46. That record also keeps the Phillies eight games out (nine games back in the loss column) of either of the two National League wild...

Philadelphia Phillies (37-46) vs. New York Mets (44-38) Cole Hamels (10-4, 3.08) vs. R.A. Dickey  (12-1, 2.15) Time: 7:10, Citi Field TV: CSN Weather: Sunny, 92 Media: Twitter and Facebook Cole Hamels has been the center of several rumors lately.  You have to wonder if these next few starts are his last in a Phillies uniform.  All Cole can do is go out there and try to get...

Amid Trade Rumors, Cole Hamels Takes on R.A. Dickey as Phillies, Mets Close Series

Since Cole Hamels last took the mound and was a hard-luck loser to Mark Buehrle and the Miami Marlins, the Phillies have one just once, and trade rumors have swirled around the 28 year-old lefthander.   In 2012 Hamels is currently 10-4 with a 3.08 ERA and will be representing the Phillies in the National League for the annual All-Star game on Tuesday in Kansas City.  This will...

Dugout Digest - Cliff Lee wins!

Cliff Lee finally got his first win of the year on Wedneday...but it wasn't easy at all. The Mets took a 2-0 lead into the seventh, and there was potential for another winless Lee today. Chase Utley hit a two-run homer in the seventh to tie the game, Carlos Ruiz hit a go-ahead solo homer, and Lee was still pitching. Then, the Phillies offense went ape. The team scored...

McCann's slam powers Braves over Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Brian McCann hit a grand slam, Tim Hudson tossed four-hit ball over seven innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0 to spoil Ryan Howard's season debut Friday night. Howard doubled in his first at-bat and was 2 for 4 in his first game since rupturing his left Achilles tendon on the final swing in a postseason elimination loss to St...

Mets 6, Phillies 5: D-Wridiculous 9th

The New York Mets came back in the 9th inning to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 6-5. The Mets are now seven games over .500, with three games left until the all-star break. Winning Pitcher: Bobby Parnell (2-1, 2.91) was the winning pitcher for the Mets tonight. Losing Pitcher: Jonathan Papelbon (2-3, 3.45) first blew the save, and then received his third loss of...
