Handed the keys to the closer’s role late last season, 27-year-old Bobby Parnell struggled to lay claim to the job moving forward.  The hard-throwing righty converted just 3 of 7 saves in September and eventually gave way to Manny Acosta at the New York Mets searched for someone to work the 9th inning down the stretch.  It’s hard to know exactly what to make of Parnell, but one thing is for certain, he’s as inconsistent as he is talented.

He enters 2012 as a player the team hopes ‘can put it all together’, but that label is going to be tougher and tougher for him to shed with each failed opportunity.  With a revamped bullpen heading into the 2012 season, Parnell no longer has a long leash as he tries to grow.  Instead, as Adam Rubin of ESPN New York points out, he may even be the odd man out when camp breaks:

Bobby Parnell has an option remaining, while Pedro Beato has three options and Manny Acosta is out of options. Acosta, as a result, is a solid bet to join a bullpen that also includes Francisco, Rauch, Ramirez and Tim Byrdak. Parnell and Beato have little assurance, although Parnell probably has a better shot. It may be partly contingent upon whether the Mets carry a second left-hander such as Daniel Herrera and/or long reliever such as Miguel Batista, Alderson added.

“I think Bobby has got an outstanding future, and it’s just a question of where he’ll pitch and to what extent it clicks this year,” Alderson said. “But, at the same time, we’ve got fewer spots available than we have quality arms at this point.”

I long campaigned for Parnell to get a shot to close and the Mets gave him just that.  He certainly wasn’t up for the challenge in 2011 and I’m not sure he ever will be.  Obviously the Mets felt he needed more time as they went out and signed Frank Francisco to work the 9th this year but the idea that Parnell could start the year off in Buffalo seems like a stretch.  He can still overpower hitters and finished last season strong, managing to not give up an earned run in his last 11 outings.

Used in the right situation and without the pressure of the 9th, I think #39 will be just fine and can hopefully learn from a slew of veteran relievers that will be pitching the back innings in Queens this season.  Someone asked me if I was finally off the Parnell bandwagon, to which I could only reply that I’m still on, but I just think it should be driven in a different direction for the time being.

Top 10 Mets Prospects of 2012: #9 Jordany Valdespin

9. Jordany Valdespin, Middle Infield, Bats: L, Throws: R, Age: 24, ETA: 2012 Valdespin is more evidence of maturity in the Mets farm system. Although he may not factor into the best option as a starting infielder in the long term, he certainly has grown and could be in the mix down the stretch this year of the Mets flounder. For Jordany Valdespin, the positives in his game outweigh...

Sandy Alderson and the Mets’ payroll drop

Loyal reader Metsense recently posted this thought: I feel sorry for Sandy Alderson. I believe, when he initially signed on, he thought of the Mets as Moneyball only with money. Imagine if he took the $142M payroll, lopped off the Perez and Castillo contracts and went into this winter with a $128M to spend. I think he would have done a few things differently to put his stamp on the...

Alderson Hopes Rotation Will Pitch Better, Have More Quality Performances

With the New York Mets one day away from pitchers and catchers reporting, lets take a look at a couple of things Sandy Alderson said yesterday when he spoke to reporters in St. Lucie. I was a little taken back by what he said when he was asked where he’d like to see the team do better? “Well, just in a general sense, we need to pitch better than we did last year. The...

Annakin Slayd records Gary Carter tribute called "Kid" (Video)

Earlier this week, Baseball Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter died at the age of 57. As a tribute to Gary Carter, Annakin Slayd, a musical artist from Montreal, recorded a song called "Kid" along with a video featuring highlights of Carter during his playing days. Most of the highlights are from Carter's years with the Expos, the team with which he spent...

TweetCap: Johan throws bullpen session; Terry Collins pleased

Yesterday afternoon at Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie, New York Mets starter Johan Santana threw 25 pitches off a mound for the first time this Spring.  Santana, who missed the entire 2010 season recovering from surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder, threw in front of Mets manager Terry Collins, general manager Sandy Alderson and pitching coach Dan...

Is Chris Young a Met...

Photo by Michael BaronOn Wednesday Adam Rubin had an injury up-date on Chris Young, the interesting part was that the up-date came from Terry Collins. At this point Young is a free agent and Collins is his former manager, it's unusual for a manager to have such an up-date on a free agent. All reports from both sides indicate that they would like a reunion and the Mets could...

What To Watch For In New York Mets Camp

The New York Mets pitchers and catchers will report to Spring Training on Monday.  I am going to take a look at what to watch for as they move along in the spring.  The Mets don’t have many expectations on them this year, the only real big name left is David Wright.  Could the Mets surprise people or will they be what everyone expects?  Only time will be able to tell. The...

New York Mets Not Reuniting With Scott Kazmir Anytime Soon

Many of us remember the moment all too well.  The moment during the summer of 2004 – off the top of my head, I want to say it was July 30th – when the New York Mets traded stud left-handed starting pitching prospect Scott Kazmir for RHP Victor Zambrano – a.k.a. rubbish.  Even though I was well aware of Scott Kazmir’s potential at this point, my attachment...

Mets Jambalinka: Lenny Randle, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Wally Backman

It was great to see video of Johan Santana throwing batting practice. Of course it’s still a long way from BP to Opening Day but each day he’s on the field makes it more likely that he’ll break camp with the Mets rather than being placed on the DL. And if Santana is on the roster when the season opens, the Mets might not have a player on the DL for the first time since very...

1986 Mets Remember "The Kid"

The following video is brought to you courtesy of Newsday. It shows some of Carter's former teammates reminiscing about the one they called "Kid." What is so nice about the outpouring of love Carter's former teammates have shared is that Carter was often mocked for his "mugging" for the camera, and although some players got on Carter for his exuberance...

Mets' Santana 'felt good' after mound session

New York Mets left-hander Johan Santana threw off a mound for the first time since last September.

Sometimes There IS Crying In Baseball

Keith Hernandez flied out to center for the second out of the inning. A tomblike silence fell over Shea. Fans stared in disbelief. The 108 regular season wins plus 6 more in the post-season meant nothing. Vin Scully announced Marty Barrett was chosen player of the game. And then…number 8 stepped to the plate. In a career that spanned nearly 2300 games and 8000 at-bats over...

For Mets, David Wright's uncertain future looms over team as spring training begins

Also, excitement abounds for pitching trio of Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler and Jeurys Familia

We’ll Miss You, Kid!

Over my 19 years of existence, I have watched thousands of archived baseball games.  Whether they are on TV or the Internet, it was always interesting to watch old games from back in the 60′s, 70′s, 80, and 90′s. However, it was always the regular and post season games of the 1986 Mets that I enjoyed watching the most and found the most exciting. It wasn’...
