Carlos Pena is usually one of the smoothest Rays on the field. However, he showed he too can be prone to defensive lapses, and his mistake Tuesday cost Tampa Bay the game, and its seven-game winning streak. Pena fielded a ninth-inning bunt and made a horribly errant throw, allowing the Mariners to have runners on second and third with no outs. From there, Seattle scored twice to send the Rays to a 3-2 defeat. "That's a play Carlos makes 100 out of 100 times," manager Joe Maddon said. "I don't know exactly what happened. It was very routine." Pena said his mistake was as much in changing his mind as the actual throw toward first base, which sailed down the right field line. He had thought about going for the out at second base. The miscue cost rookie Matt Moore a win, cost Fernando Rodney a save, and cost his team an important game. "It's one of those mistakes that really, really hurts," said Pena, who struck out three times and drew a walk in his four plate appearances.
