Tampa Bay Rays fans of all ages enjoy seeing and petting the rays at Tropicana Field’s touch tank. The tank, which was opened in 2006, has been a fan favorite at the ballpark. But now, after just the second home run ball to land in it, PETA has a problem with it. The organization, who has an issue with anything that has to do with animals taken out of their natural habitat or being “mistreated”, is now going after the Rays’ organization to remove the rays touch tank from the ballpark. “The problem with touch tanks is that they are pretty much death traps,” PETA spokesperson Carrie Poppy told JP Peterson on WDAE. “They trap bacteria, they trap parasites, and so actually out in the wild you’re right they face their own predators, generally they are not subjected to all these human diseases and parasites that we bring in when we put them in captivity.” That’s a fair statement. However, the Florida Aquarium has been overseeing the tank since it’s installment. The entire interview (which can be heard below) is rather comical. In seven years, the Rays have not had a problem with the tank. But just because a second home run ball lands in the tank in it’s history now it’s a problem? While PETA serves for a good cause, they also overstep their own authority and get away with nonsense at times. If the tank wasn’t a problem before, then it shouldn’t be a problem now. And while they are at it, they should petition to shut down every touch tank in each aquarium and theme park across the world.
