Central to the Yankees’ hot start this season – a burst out of the gates that kept the team above water through the sluggish months to follow – was the turned-young-again pitching of Andy Pettitte. And central to the team’s resurgence this August – a stretch of 13 wins in 17 games that has thrust the Yanks back into the playoff race – has been the same implausible success from the same 41-year-old southpaw. Andy Pettitte has roared back to life in August. Pettitte, whose 2012 season was cut short by injury, decided to return this year to finish what he had started. He threw only 75 innings in 2012 while pitching to an ERA of 2.87 – his lowest since 2005 – so the ageless lefty was short on neither energy nor motivation heading into Spring Training. His vigor was quickly proven in April when Andy won his first three starts, allowing just five runs over 22-plus innings. After a May 11th win against the Royals – his last full start before going down with a shoulder injury five days late...

Brooklyn grocery store named after A-Rod is changing its name

getty images A-Rod Grocery is changing its name. The grocery store was changed from Pena Grocery to A-Rod Grocery thirteen years ago while the third baseman was still playing with the Seattle Mariners. Rodriguez eventually came to join the Yankees and patrons at the store soon believed that Rodriguez may even had a owners stake in the place. Instead the store is owned by 41-year...

Ichiro 4,000: A Celebration, Then A Move Up In The Standings

It was great to see Ichiro Suzuki get his 4,000th career hit at home, in Yankee Stadium, in front of the hometown fans. I was in the process of leaving work during the historic moment, however, and had to settle for hearing it on radio.John Sterling did not disappoint. He was his usual outrageous self. In case you missed it, listen to it here.I liked what manager Joe Girardi said...

Yankees celebrate Ichiro Suzuki's 4,000th career hit (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes. New York Yankees right fielder Ichiro Suzuki collected the 4,000th career hit of his professional baseball career with a single in the first inning of Wednesday night's game in the Bronx. Ichiro became only the third player in baseball history to achieve the milestone. In a touching moment, the Yankees came out from the dugout to...

Is Ichiro Suzuki Hall of Fame Material?

Even before New York Yankees' outfielder Ichiro Suzuki reached on a single on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, discussions began about what that hit would do for the Japanese sensation's chances of enshrinement into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. The hit itself was nothing significant, but he did it in classic Ichiro fashion: a single (off Toronto's R.A. Dickey...

Report: Alex Rodriguez was given a standing offer of a 150 game suspension by MLB

When we last left the Alex Rodriguez circus, we learned that Rodriguez was willing to accept an 80-100 game suspension, and then retire when his suspension was served. All because Rodriguez wants most, if not all the money remaining on his Yankees contract. Since then Rodriguez has vowed to refrain from discussing all non-baseball matters. But that hasn’t stopped those close to...

Meric/Getty Images) New York Yankees 2 — Tampa Bay Rays 7   A rare bad start by Hiroki Kuroda in tonight’s 7-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees got behind the speed of Brett Gardner for the offense tonight. He would start the game with a walk and would steal second base...

Alex Rodriguez tells his lawyers to stop threatening New York Yankees

Alex Rodriguez is hoping for the best possible outcome in his appeal of a 211-game suspension for performance-enhancing drug use. He has hired an All-Star team of lawyers than includes top New York criminal defense attorney Joe Tacopina. Since Tacopina came on board, A-Rod’s situation has become about far more than his alleged involvement with […]

After getting blasted in Tampa Bay, New York Yankees ace Hiroki Kuroda is no longer a Cy Young award candidate.

Struggling New York Yankees ace Hiroki Kuroda surrendered seven runs over six innings in a 7-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. Managing to keep the ball in the park since June 30, the 38-year-old Kuroda (11-9, 2.71 ERA) yielded four homers to Tampa Bay. Now owning only the fourth smallest ERA amongst American League starters, the Japanese sensation is no longer a legitimate...

Ichiro Reaches Musial Numbers

The New York Yankees’ outfielder, Ichiro Suzuki, reaches an amazing plateau last night. With a single to left field, Ichiro had his 4,000th hit of his professional career.  That’s a number that has only been accomplished in Major League Baseball by two individuals, Pete Rose and Ty Cobb.  The problem is, Ichiro did not reach that level in the big leagues. The 4,000 hits of...

Yankees-Rays Preview

Simply focused on trying to beat the New York Yankees, the Tampa Bay Rays won't let the presence of Alex Rodriguez be a distraction during this key weekend series. The Rays try to prevent the visiting Yankees from matching a season high with their sixth consecutive victory Friday night. Though Rodriguez won't answer any non-baseball related questions, each city New York...

Yankees' Brett Gardner's X-rays show hand is fine

Yankee fans should breathe a heavy sigh of relief that Brett Gardner's hand is not broken. On Saturday, the Yankees sent Gardner for precautionary X-Rays after the center fielder took a pitch off the hand in the third inning of Friday night's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Gardner finished the game, but the Yankees -- in light of their myriad of injuries this year -- wanted...

Ichiro Reaches 4000 Hits

I realize it is cliche, but when Ichiro Suzuki laced an opposite field single Wednesday night...it became the modern day equivalent to "the shot heard 'round the world". Why?  Do you even need to ask?!? That basehit off Toronto Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey was number 4000 for the New York Yankees star.  And if you're keeping track (and who isn't?...
