The Philadelphia Phillies are in the middle of a horrible season and they have to be happy the first half has mercifully come to a close. The Phillies enter the All-Star break with a 37-50 record and are a whopping 14 games back of the Washington Nationals for first place in the National League East. As a result the Phillies are likely to be sellers in the second half of the season. One player likely on his way out of town is three-time All-Star starting pitcher Cole Hamels. In fact, Hamels has now stated publicly that he’s open to a move, and he’s even open to re-signing with the Phillies if they do trade him. The best move for the Phillies would be to ship Hamels to a contender before the trade deadline netting prospects in return, then try to re-sign him in the offseason. As things stand, the Los Angeles Dodgers will likely be heavily involved in any discussions involving Hamels, especially because they will have the money to be the highest bidder for him this offseason. The Ph...

Papelbon stops fan from climbing into bullpen

Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon rushed from his seat to stop a fan from climbing into the bullpen during the seventh inning of Philadelphia's game against Atlanta on Saturday night. A man wearing a yellow shirt ran onto the field from near the right-field stands and headed directly toward the Phillies' bullpen behind the center-field wall. Once the fan started climbing...

Phillies Have Traded Centerfielder Shane Victorino to...the Cleveland Spiders?

Photo: Philliedelphia/Steve Trapani In the end it sounds like a good old fashioned benching by the manager.  The underperforming Shane Victorino and subject of many trade rumors this season was pulled from the Phillies starting lineup within an hour of game time with no explanation, prompted many to speculate that he had been traded.  Some speculate it stemmed from Victorino being...

Phillies Jonathan Papelbon and Jimmy Rollins to Ruben Amaro: Don't Trade Hamels

Photo: Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso It's not uncommon that you hear of other players speaking about their teammates after being traded. What is uncommon is hearing other players speaking about their teammates before being traded. According to Todd Zolecki, a few players who spoke to reporters yesterday mentioned the recent rumors of their teammate Cole Hamels being potentially...

Dodgers Looking To Reunite With Shane Victorino?

Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino appears to be on his way out of Philadelphia, according to a report by Jon Heyman this afternoon. Dylan Hernandez is disagreeing, according to his latest tweet. Hernandez says the Dodgers are still looking for a corner infielder, starting pitching, and a left-handed reliever.  Heyman adds that people familiar with the situation have suggested...

Phillies Nation TV 19: Hamels, Victorino, Grades

The latest edition of PN TV looks at the Cole Hamels trade possibilities and the likelihood he stays in Philadelphia. Some good quotes from a one-on-one with CSNPhilly that we discuss. Also, is there even a market for Shane Victorino? His down year has to be scaring off trade suitors. We also give grades for the bullpen, offense, and starting pitching as we’ve hit the midway point...

Hunter Pence runs over third base coach Juan Samuel (Video)

Hunter Pence hilariously ran over Phillies third base coach Juan Samuel while trying to score from second on a double by Juan Pierre during Saturday’s game against the Braves. Pence didn’t loop out before rounding the bag like players are taught, and he was so wide of the base line that he ended up running into Samuel and bowling the coach over. Samuel stood with his hat knocked...

Can The Dodgers Bring Cole Hamels Home?

Yesterday, I mentioned a report by Jon Heyman, of the Dodgers being interested in Shane Victorino. This rumor was quickly debunked by Dylan Hernandez, so I don't think there is much to worry about here. Obviously it makes sense for the Dodgers to take a look at every opportunity that could help the team. I have already said multiple times, an outfielder could definitely...

Phillies Drop Another Game to the Braves, 6-3

Amidst a stretch of games played against the National League East, the Phillies' woes grew worse tonight in the second game of this three-game series against Tommy Hanson and the Braves.  Brian McCann, coming off a big night, went deep again in the top of the second to put up the first run of the game.  The Phillies rallied in the bottom of the second to put up a three...

What Greinke or Hamels Would Yield in a Trade

With the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies 6.0 and 10.0 games out, respectively, of the second wild-card spot in the National League, it’s probable that one or both teams will trade their front-line, free-agent-to-be starters — i.e. Zack Greinke and Cole Hamels — before the July 31st trade deadline. “What might either be worth in terms of a trade?” is a question...

Dugout Digest - diminishing stars

The Braves beat the Phillies 6-3 last night (and I was there, which is why this DD is coming so late), but it wasn't the result that was surprising...it was the Phillies set of struggles since their two stars have returned. Ryan Howard came back to the team on Friday, and despite not playing yesterday, the Phillies are 0-2 with him on the active roster. Chase Utley was...

Trade talk in the Mets’ front office

Scene – A large corporate office where three men are engaged in heavy discussion.  Each of them holds an old fashioned glass, with ice cubes and ginger ale.  The drinks may or may not contain bourbon.  The oldest of the three is clearly the leader but the two younger men are confident enough to state their opinions without fear of ridicule or dismissal. ***** Older man: We...
