San Diego Padres
For most of the first three months of the Major League Baseball season, Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon had been excellent. But for some reason, over his past few outings, the 32-year-old right-hander has fallen apart. On Monday night, Papelbon entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a 3-0 lead over the San Diego Padres. He proceeded to blow his third save in a row and fourth in his last five chances. Maybe this is just a bad stretch of play from him, but man he’s just completely melted down over the past week. Cliff Lee was masterful for eight innings Monday night, holding the Padres scoreless and scattering six hits. But when he opened the ninth inning by surrendering a single to Carlos Quentin and a double to Chase Headley, manager Charlie Manuel called on his closer to finish it out. Papelbon entered and promptly gave up a two-run single to Kyle Blanks, then hit Jesus Guzman to put runners on first and second with no one out. Yasmani Grandal then grounded int...
BEST OF MAXIM
Last week, Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. declared that closer Jonathan Papelbon is not available. The Phillies continue to hover around the wrong side of the .500-mark, and Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe isn't buying what Amaro's selling, as he believes Papelbon will become available this summer, especially after he scolded teammates following...
LET'S MAKE A DEAL
Could Jonathan Papelbon be on the trade market? The Phillies have a losing record, and teams could be looking to add a closer.
The trade rumors are flying in and fast. First we heard about Ricky Nolasco, then we heard about Matt Garza. Now it's Jonathan Papelbon's turn to be involved in the rumors.
The Phillies are in talks with the Red Sox and Tigers about a potential deal surrounding Jonathan Papelbon, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark.
Papelbon has struggled recently as he has blown...
Believe it or not, July is almost here.
That’s crazy to think about. It seems like just yesterday we had no idea what offseason direction the Red Sox were going to go in, and now the question is whether they’ll consider making a splash at the trade deadline as they march toward a potential division crown. The season is still young, but it’s aging fast, and the Red Sox have...
From now until baseball’s July 31st trade deadline, we’ll provide a roundup and analysis of the hottest rumors involving the hometown Detroit Tigers.
In the last several weeks, it’s become clear just what the Detroit Tigers plan to do prior to late July, and it has everything to do with finding reliable arms for the bullpen. The question many experts are attempting to answer...
(Kim Klement/USA TODAY )It's obvious that the Red Sox might want to trade for a closer—but do the struggles of Will Middlebrooks suggest they need a third baseman more urgently? All the talk of late has swirled around the possibility of re-acquiring Jonathan Papelbon from Philadelphia. But Phillies GM Ruben Amaro has made it clear that the cost to get the erstwhile Boston closer...
Two big news items from this afternoon – the first comes from Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki who says that Roy Halladay is feeling “good”. Zolecki notes that Halladay has been throwing from 60 ft. The Phillies are hoping Halladay will return in late August at the earliest.
Rich Dubee had this to say about watching Halladay in Zolecki’s piece:
“It looks very, very good...
Prior to this past week, Jonathan Papelbon had converted all 13 of his save opportunities. But last night against the Padres, he dropped another bomb on the Phillies; it was his 4th blown save in his last 5 attempts. Red alert! The Phillies have been Papelbombed!
Worse than that, starting pitcher Cliff Lee took a 3-0 lead into the 9th inning before the bomb dropped. After putting...
Kyle Blanks singled home the winning run in the 10th inning for his fourth hit of the game, and the San Diego Padres rallied from a three-run deficit in the ninth to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Monday night.
Blanks also had a two-run single and scored the tying run on a passed ball in the ninth as the Padres fought back against Cliff Lee and struggling closer Jonathan Papelbon...

Jonathan Papelbon blew a save against San Diego in what CSN Philadelphia is calling the worst loss of the season. So lets take a second and ask ourselves this question: Do we really want him as our closer? I say no for a couple of reasons.
For one, think of what we would have to give up. If we want an established pitcher like Pap, then I'm sure Philadelphia...
With an ailing bullpen and struggling closer, the Phillies needed Cliff Lee to go deep into Monday’s opener against San Diego. Lee went eight plus innings, but the Phillies imploded once again, blowing a three run lead in the ninth before allowing the Padres to walk off with the 4-3 win in the tenth.
Jonathan Papelbon blew his fourth save in his last five chances, and the Phillies...
Yesterday afternoon, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports did what he usually does: wrtie about the Major League Baseball trade market. And of course, it was more about the scuffling Phillies, who appear to be the team most likely to trade someone since it, you know, makes sense. But yet, Phillies...
The Phillies jumped out to a 2-0 lead that was quickly erased, and found themselves looking at a series loss with the game 5-2 in the 7th. But Kevin Frandsen hit an RBI single and Delmon Young hit a two-run home run to send the game to extras. It took until the 13th for them to score, when heads up baserunning by Chase Utley and Domonic Brown put the Phillies ahead 7-5...
