Steven Bisig - US Presswire
Earlier this month, the Philadelphia Phillies signed slugger Jack Cust to a minor-league deal with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Cust played in six games, batting .250 in 20 at-bats before the Phillies released him.
The Phillies had hoped Cust might be a left-handed power bat off the bench for their major-league team. Currently that position is being filled by Ross Gload. The Phillies have also expressed interest in Jason Giambi and Jim Thome, two players with over 1,000 combined home runs.
Cust had batted .213 with three home runs in 76 games for the Seattle Mariners earlier this season before they released him.
