Darin Ruf and Chase Utley sparked a three-run fifth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-8 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.
Utley, who had three hits, drove in the tying run on a triple to deep center field. He soon scored on a Domonic Brown ground out to give the Phillies the lead. Ruf added one more on a solo home run, his fourth of the season.
Philadelphia tagged Edwin Jackson (7-12) for seven runs and 10 hits in six innings.
Trailing 9-5 in the ninth, the Cubs scored three runs off Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon before pinch-hitter Thomas Neal flew out with men on the corners to end it.
Kyle Kendrick (10-8) allowed five runs and six hits in six innings. He also had an RBI single.
Utley plated the Phillies' first run in the first inning on a single to left field to score Michael Young.
The Cubs then responded with four runs in the second, capped off by Donnie Murphy's three-run homer, his first hit of the season.
Anthony Rizzo hit a solo home run in the third to make it 5-2. It was Rizzo's fourth homer in six games.
Ruf extended his on-base streak to 33 straight games with an RBI double in the third to cut the Cubs' lead to 5-4. Ruf's streak, which dates back to last year, is the longest active in the major leagues and the longest for the Phillies since Utley's mark of equal length from September 2008 to April 2009.
Young knocked in a run with a two-out double in the sixth, and Carlos Ruiz homered in the eighth.
Philadelphia is 2-13 in its last 15 games.

Thus far there has been no indication of what the figures of the deal will be, though CBS’ Jon Heyman has speculated...
36 games into his MLB career and Darin Ruf already has a streak of 33 games of reaching base safely. In those 36 games he's hit .316/.994, 19 R, 9 DBL, 1 TRPL, 7 HR, and 17 RBI. It's a small sample size, but it also goes to show that he's one of the few reasons to tune in and stomach watching the Phillies over the final months of the season. I've been rooting for...

Mission nearly accomplished.

In the seventh inning of a tie game last night, the Phillies third base coach waved around Chase Utley to try and score on a base hit to right field. Cubs right fielder Cole Gillespie gathered the line drive on a couple bounces and fired to home plate, one-hopping it to Chicago catcher Dioner Navarro, who was attempting to block the plate. The big news of the night was the Chase Utley extension. He didn’t start the game, but nearly finished it in the seventh when he, as the go-ahead run–was thrown out at home after a collision with Dioner Navarro. The Phillies never got that go-ahead run in, and a three run home run in the...

Utley is now reported to be under contract through 2015 after agreeing to a two-year contract extension worth between $25 and $30 million according to multiple reports, which secures the infield core of Jimmy Rollins, Utley and Ryan...
Cole Hamels had another strong outing wasted by little run support. Still it continues a nice streak of good outings. Hamels threw 82 pitches over 7 innings, allowing just 2 runs and probably could have gone further had the situation demanded a pinch hitter. Chase Utley, celebrating his reported extension,...
^Darin Ruf, probably wondering if someone will drive him in Cliff Lee didn't have his best stuff Sunday night, and the Phillies' bats were stagnant yet again in a 4-1 loss to the Braves. Lee (10- 5) was in trouble early against the Braves, who had taken the first two...
