The Philadelphia Phillies' double-A affiliate is tweaking its name and adding an...ostrich?
The Reading Phillies changed their name Saturday to the Fightin Phils, a nod to the big club's longtime nickname. And the farm team also says a pugnacious ostrich, complete with balled fists, is its new mascot.
The club says the name change - in the city affectionately known as Baseballtown - distinguishes the minor league team from its big brother.
The ostrich is a reference to a running on-field gag known as the Crazy Hot Dog Vendor, who ''rides'' on to the field in an ostrich costume.
The team's new uniform choices include alternate jerseys bearing the ''Baseballtown'' name in script.

The Phillies announced today that outfielder Zach Collier and right-handed pitchers Ethan Martin, Trevor May, and Jonathan Pettibone have been added to the 40-man roster.
Collier, 22, was the Phillies’ supplemental first round pick, 34th overall, in 2008. The 6’2 lefty showed improved plate discipline in 2012, hitting .269/.333/.399 in his first year at High-A Clearwater...
Darin Ruf could make the 25-man team of the 2013 Philadelphia Phillies next April. However, it will be due only in part to his long-ball noise during October and November. But keep in mind, the warning-track patrol should become much clearer by mid-December.

The Phillies bullpen was a major point of contention this season as it rated as one of the very worst in the sport.
However, ‘bullpen’ is not a static term, as relievers come and go. The relief corps at the end of a season could look vastly different than it did during the first couple of months. The Phillies fit this description and, for that reason, it isn’t entirely fair...
PhilliesTags: Juan PierrePhilliesThe Phillies didn’t have many bright spots in 2012, but outfielder Juan Pierre was one of them.
Pierre was brought in during Spring Training as a non-roster invite, and wasn’t promised a spot on the team. However the veteran was able to play his way onto the Opening Day roster, and spent the majority of the [...](Read more...)
Thanks to La Salle University's David Grzybowski for providing video of the Philadelphia Phillies Double-A team's rebranding into the Reading Fightin' Phils. The uniforms are pretty sweet and I love the ostrich as the mascot, very minor league-esque. Phillies organizational good soldier Mike Spidale was the model, he of 1407 minor league hits over 13 seasons.
The Florida Marlins have signed Juan Pierre, Craig Mish of Sirius 210 XM reports (and later confirmed by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports). The terms of the deal are not yet known. This is probably not the signing Marlins' fans were looking for after the team traded just about every decent player on the roster, but Pierre will definitely will the team.
Pierre signed a minor league deal...

According to rumors, the Philadelphia Phillies view free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton as a "fallback option" if they are unable to sign B.J. Upton and Michael Bourn.
The Phillies have some decisions to make for tonight's deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft. Before midnight tonight, any player signed at 18 or younger with five years of minor league time, or signed at 19 with four or more, must be on the 40 man roster, or they will exposed to the draft. Being that they have 34 players on the 40 man now, they cannot...
Nearly 10 years later to the day to that the Florida Marlins first acquired Juan Pierre, he returns to them, this time in Miami on a 1 year $1.6M contract. A decade ago (November 16, 2002), the Marlins got both Pierre and Mike Hampton in a trade with the Colorado Rockies. He'll fill the leadoff void for the Fish and presumably play LF. Last year with the Phillies he hit .307...
Per the IronPigs, the Phillies have rounded out their Minor League coaching staffs. Joining new manager Dave Brundage on the ‘Pigs staff is the returning hitting coach Sal Rende and Ray Burris, who joins the ‘Pigs as their pitching coach replacing Rod Nichols.
From the press release:
Burris, 62, becomes just the second pitching coach in team history. The native of Duke, Okla...

We're over a month removed from Phillies baseball, and frankly, I'm bored. Sure, there's football (other than the Iggles) and a time of gross over-eating coming up, but I want Phillies news. I crave it. I fully expected Ruben Amaro to have made some crazy trade by now that would make me hate-love him even more. Instead, I'm forced to...

In preparation for the Rule 5 draft, the Phillies have added four players to the 40-man roster, CSNPhilly reports. The four are RHP Trevor May, RHP Jonathan Pettibone, OF Zach Collier, and RHP Ethan Martin. The move keeps other teams from claiming them in the upcoming Rule 5 draft.
The draft allows a team to select players from...
According to multiple sources, Juan Pierre has agreed to a one-year, $1.6 million contract.
The 35-year-old outfielder will be making his second stint with the organization, offering veteran leadership, a tremendous work ethic and speed.
Pierre appeared in 130 games with the Phillies in 2012, batting .307 with 37 stolen bases.
Entering his 14th big league season, Pierre previously...
Per a report from MLB.com, the Philadelphia Phillies are making a push to acquire free agent outfielder B.J. Upton. Upton has spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Rays after debuting in 2004.
Although Upton has struggled the last few seasons with less than impressive batting averages, he would fill several key voids for the Phillies: an outfielder, a right handed bat with power...
After dumping more than half of their players in a pathetic attempt to rebuild their sh***y team, the Miami Marlins have reportedly made an acquisition to make up for it. According to Sirius XM's Craig Mish, the Marlins have agreed to a contract with former Phillie Juan Pierre.
Pierre, 35, signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies last off season, but played in the big leagues...
