Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro Jr. went way out of his way yesterday to shoot down rumors that he as shopping Cole Hamels. As I wrote yesterday, trading Hamels may be an inevitability. But for now, it appears as though the Phillies and Amaro are attempting to save face.

Obviously, if it is out that the Phillies are shopping Hamels, it could impact their negotiations with him and his agent. Not that there appear to be any negotiations to impact at the moment.

Amaro sent messages to local reporters and even voluntarily called Mike Missanelli on 97.5 FM The Fanatic to refute the reports that the Phillies are shopping Hamels. Amaro stood firm saying that the Phillies’ goal is to keep Hamels in a Phillies’ uniform both short-term and long-term.

The fact is that there are GMs of other teams that have indicated that they’ve spoken to the Phillies regarding Hamels. That would pretty much contradict what Amaro said yesterday.

The Phillies will need to figure out the likelihood of signing Hamels soon, as the trade deadline of July 31st is now 4 weeks away. It all comes down to whether the Phillies will keep/lose Hamels on his terms or theirs.

To trade Cole Hamels or not?

The Phillies may have picked up a big win keyed by a late-inning scoring outburst against the New York Mets, but the five-time reigning NL East champions remain 14 games back in the loss column against the Washington Nationals with a record of 36-46. That record also keeps the Phillies eight games out (nine games back in the loss column) of either of the two National League wild...

Bucs must deal for Greinke or Hamels

The 2012 Pirates are not unlike the 2008 Brewers, trying to end a long drought, trying to win over a skeptical city. What did those Brewers do? They traded for left-hander CC Sabathia and reached the postseason for the first time since 1982. What should these Pirates do? Make like the Brew Crew, pull off a franchise-altering move and trade for either Brewers right-hander Zack Greinke...
