Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro Jr. went way out of his way yesterday to shoot down rumors that he as shopping Cole Hamels. As I wrote yesterday, trading Hamels may be an inevitability. But for now, it appears as though the Phillies and Amaro are attempting to save face.

Obviously, if it is out that the Phillies are shopping Hamels, it could impact their negotiations with him and his agent. Not that there appear to be any negotiations to impact at the moment.

Amaro sent messages to local reporters and even voluntarily called Mike Missanelli on 97.5 FM The Fanatic to refute the reports that the Phillies are shopping Hamels. Amaro stood firm saying that the Phillies’ goal is to keep Hamels in a Phillies’ uniform both short-term and long-term.

The fact is that there are GMs of other teams that have indicated that they’ve spoken to the Phillies regarding Hamels. That would pretty much contradict what Amaro said yesterday.

The Phillies will need to figure out the likelihood of signing Hamels soon, as the trade deadline of July 31st is now 4 weeks away. It all comes down to whether the Phillies will keep/lose Hamels on his terms or theirs.
