Darin Ruf leads Winter League with 10 home runs Winter ball for the Phillies Darin Ruf has been overall a success. Ruf who is playing in the Venezuelan Winter League is leading the league after 32 games with 10 home runs. Ruf is also tied for the lead in RBI with 27 and is among the league leaders in  runs, slugging, doubles and slugging percentage. Reports coming from Venezuela media do not have Ruf returning for the second half of the season. The departure of Juan Pierre who signed with Miami does not come as a great surprise. The Phillies who were on the record as “wanting to resign him” were unlikely to do so. The Phillies plan of making Ruf their everyday left-fielder is starting to come to shape. The brief stint in Winter Ball hardly a complete nod for the job certainly is enough to give him a shot this spring. Dollars and Cents will play a huge part of the Phillies winter as they have big needs for the 2013 season. Ruf comes cheap and he will be under club control for quite some time. To find a free-agent who can protect Ryan Howard will not come any cheaper than Ruf and the Phillies still need to find an everyday player at third. Do the Phillies plan to use Brown and Mayberry to round out the outfield? I would doubt either are planned as everyday players, making the Ruf in left campaign all the more likely; as the Phillies could be spending big money for those spots as well.Similar Posts: Ruf proves he can play in the majors – Will he be the Phillies left fielder in 2013? Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Ruf’s path, a revelation

Darin Ruf could make the 25-man team of the 2013 Philadelphia Phillies next April. However, it will be due only in part to his long-ball noise during October and November. But keep in mind, the warning-track patrol should become much clearer by mid-December. Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Amaro’s new direction

The pursuit of talent for the Philadelphia Phillies is a 8th-inning set-up man, and a center fielder in that exact order, while it simultaneously presents Darin Ruf with a leftfield shot.  Why is the brain trust concentrating on the 2nd choice first? Phillies Player Review: Nate Schierholtz

Nate Schierholtz was the one player the Phillies got in return for Hunter Pence who was not only big league-ready, but had already accrued a fair amount of major league service time. A kind of enigma in San Francisco, Schierholtz came to Philly with the promise of consistent playing time and an opportunity to prove himself to his new manager as an everyday player. It was a new start...

Extension Debate: Should the Phillies Extend Roy Halladay?

When the Philadelphia Phillies brought Roy Halladay on, they believed he was part of the solution and would help net the team a World Series title.  They were right.  In 2008, the Phillies won it all.  However, they have struggled and feel short of expectations since.  Halladay on the other hand, has been a portrait of consistency until this season when he hurt his shoulder...

Black Friday 1977: How Fate Reminded Philadelphia Of Its Heritage

This article was originally posted on Black Friday 2010. Black Friday is a term that was coined here in Philadelphia during the winter of 1966. It described the congestion of vehicle and foot traffic caused by Christmas shoppers attempting to take advantage of early Christmas sales in the Center City shopping districts. For Philadelphia Phillies fans, it’s an ominous term that...

Phillies Rumors: Philadelphia Targeting Upton, Bourn, Pagan and Victorino

Why I Love the Phillies – Amber

I grew up in New England, where I was exposed to the Red Sox growing up. Unfortunately, I could never get excited about the team. One day, back around 2004 or so, I was watching the Phillies on television and instantly fell in love with the team. They showed a great deal of heart and struck me as a team full of true winners, regardless of their win-loss record at the end of the...

Phillies Sign Third Baseman Josh Fields

The Phillies have made a signing, and it's a third baseman.  However, he is not likely the solution.  Today the Phillies signed third baseman Josh Fields to a minor league contract.    Once a top prospect, Fields will likely go into Spring Training along the lines of the many minor league infielders the Phillies have signed over the years.  Hopefully they will get lucky...

Phillies Holiday Shopping List

‘Tis the season to buy lots of crap! Black Friday, Cyber Monday….here we come! The Phillies began shopping early when they signed Kevin Frandsen earlier this month to a 1-year, $850,000 deal. If Frandsen plays the way he did last year, that small chunk of change could wind up being the bargain of the year. But the Phillies have a much longer shopping list than that. Unfortunately...

Josh Hamilton Rumors: Free Agent No Longer on Phillies’ List

Earlier this week it was reported that the Philadelphia Phillies considered free agent slugger Josh Hamilton as a “backup option” in their pursuit of outfielders. However, Hamilton is no longer on the team’s list, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN. Agents who have spoken with the Phillies say that despite their pursuit of both a center fielder and right fielder...

As a rookie with the Chicago White Sox in 2007, he had 23 homers and 67 RBI in 100 games, but his production...

Third Base Insurance- Josh Fields

Former 1st round pick and highly regarded prospect, Josh Fields, has signed a minor league contract with the Phillies.  His last action in the Majors came back in 2010 with the Royals.  In 4 seasons with the White Sox and KC he hit .234/.724 over 217 games.  He's played primarily 3rd base, but has also seen time in LF and 1B. Fields turns 30 years old in December and has...
