Found July 31, 2013 on Philly Sports World:
Today at 4 PM, the MLB non-waiver trade deadline will come. What once looked like it could be an active sell off for the Philadelphia Phillies, may come and go with very little to no change. In the past week, reports have surfaced that the Phillies and Chase Utley, in the final year of his contract, may be working toward an extension. While the thinking is that there aren’t many better options than Utley, there are certainly cheaper ones than the $13-15 million per that Utley is likely to command. So cross Utley off the list. After a particularly embarrassing 12-4 loss to the Tigers this weekend, Jimmy Rollins was asked about potentially being moved. Rollins made it quite clear that he would not waive his no trade rights that come with being a 10/5 player (10 years of MLB service/5 with the same team). I’m not sure Rollins would have fetched a boat load of prospects, but you can cross him off too. Michael Young, acquired in the offseason, has been a logical candidate to ship off to a contender, particularly in the AL where he spent the majority all of his career until this year and where he could DH. Even though the Phillies promoted third base prospect Cody Asche yesterday in what appeared to be a signal that Young was on his way out, Michael Young remains a Phillie this morning. Reports suggest he would only accept a trade to one team – the Texas Rangers. The very team he was traded from earlier this year. If he won’t waive his no trade rights and accept a deal to another team, you can scratch him off as well. The Phillies have listened to offers for Cliff Lee, but are said to want 3-4 legitimate prospects to let go of their left handed ace. If the Phillies really do want to retool and try to compete next year, giving up your best pitcher might not make much sense. Especially given that he’s still under contract for two more years. The likelihood and complexity of getting a deal done for Lee seems to wane with every passing moment. Carlos Ruiz and Cole Hamels rumors never really got started. I’m not sure the Phillies would even consider moving Hamels anyway. And Ruiz is having a down year in the final year of his contract. I’m not sure the return would even be worth the trade. So what’s left? One thing that has been made clear this season is that the Phillies need some change. They need some youth and need to retool and restock their farm system. With all of that being said, it’s quite possible that 4 PM comes and goes with no significant changes being made to this team. That, is not acceptable. The only way to get better is to make change happen. If the Phillies don’t do that now, they’ll likely wind up losing players like Young and Ruiz in November and get nothing in return for them. If that happens then the change this team will need will be at the GM spot. Ruben Amaro needs to act now. Failure to do so should result in him losing his job.Similar Posts: For Phillies, Golden Era is now a memory Fading Phillies looking like sellers Maclin’s ACL tear hurts contract hopes New look Flyers will be a crapshoot McNabb to officially retire as an Eagle, greatest quarterback in Eagle history?
