Found November 30, 2012 on Phillies Nation:
Schierhotlz will not return to the Phillies in 2013. According to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, the Phillies have non-tendered outfielder Nate Schierholtz and let him become a free agent. Schierholtz hit .273/.319/.379 in just 73 plate appearances last year after being acquired in the Hunter Pence trade. Schierholtz, 28, is a career .270/.319/.409 hitter with a plus arm in right field and has been worth about a Win Above Replacement level per year according to FanGraphs. Schierholtz made $1.3 million last year and likely would have seen a raise had the Phillies tendered an offer. The move leaves the Phillies with 37 players on their 40 man roster which includes four outfielders who have played in the Majors (Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr., Laynce Nix, and Darin Ruf) and two that have not (Zach Collier and Tyson Gillies).

Philadelphia Phillies news: Suds or studs, top-tier aces

Roy Halladay is poised to rebound after an injury-plagued 2012 for the Philadelphia Phillies. Does he get beer-leagued or crowned? How about a pass? How did the other number ones fare in your humble opinion? TAL’S HANDY CAPS:  POLL   WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: This is the first of a new feature, which will be honed over time, like my other postings. Phillies' deal for Lopez on hold

The Phillies have "put the brakes" on a deal that would've brought reliever Wilton Lopez to Philadelphia, according to a CSNPhilly.com report. The web site said Lopez had come to Philadelphia for a physical on Wednesday, though it wasn't clear whether there was anything physically wrong with the pitcher. On Wednesday, multiple reports said the Phillies had acquired...

The Wilton Lopez trade to the Phillies is off

Yesterday, we brought you the news of the Astros potentially trading closer Wilton Lopez to the Phillies. Well, today it appears that the trade will not be happening after Lopez's physical with the Phillies hadn't gone well. Reportedly, Lopez's elbow is what gave Philadelphia's doctors pause. The Phillies were reportedly going to send pitcher Tyler Cloyd and catcher...

Don't Forget, Phillies Fans: Darin Ruf Can Pitch, Too!

Just a late Saturday night thought and one of the last minutes of peace and quiet before the Winter Meetings is full of rumors, thanks to baseball columnists noticing two GMs in the elevator together and writing that they are discussing a blockbouster deal. Any rate, Chris Starr on Twitter...

Why I Love the Phillies – Jim

I began following the Phillies in 1948. My best pal, my Uncle Joe introduced me to them and I was hooked. If Uncle Joe liked them they must be good…turns out they weren’t. But I didn’t care. I was 6 and had never seen a game, just heard Joe’s stories. He saw the Babe and Lou play, yet this Johnstown-born man wasn’t a Yankee fan, nor a Pirate follower. He moved to Harrisburg...

Phillies to Cut Outfielder Nate Schierholtz

As ESPN's Jerry Crasnick just reported, the Phillies are soon to be parting ways with utility outfielder Nate Schierholtz. Schierholtz, acquired in the Hunter Pence trade this past season, was expendable with left-handed bats Laynce Nix and Domonic Brown. Schierholtz will soon be a free agent, adding another outfielder to...

Phillies Trade With Astros for Wilton Lopez is Reportedly Dead

I'm glad they tried.  According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, the trade that would have sent Astros reliever Wilton Lopez to the Phillies is pretty much dead.  Apparently the Phillies were not comfortable for the results of Lopez's physical: A deal had been agreed upon, pending Lopez passing his physical, but it appears both teams are going their separate ways. The...

Josh Hamilton Rumors: Could Phillies Surprise and Sign Slugger?

One prominent agent said the Philadelphia Phillies could “surprise everyone” and sign free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton this offseason, reports Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. "Watch out for #phillies to surprise everyone and sign Hamilton,'' said one prominent agent. A scout told me the same thing. — Jerry Crasnick (@jcrasnick) November 29, 2012 ...

Non-Tendered Targets

Lannan is now available. Would you like to see him in Phillies' pinstripes? Yesterday, we learned the Phillies did not tender a contract to outfielder Nate Schierholtz. With that move, the Phillies sit at 37 players on their 40-man roster and now have some wiggle-room to address their needs at third base, center field, and pitching. If you’ve read my posts before, I love talking...

Wilton Ramos Trade to Phillies on Hold After Physical, Could be an Elbow Issue

Yesterday, the Philadelphia Phillies were on the verge of trading for reliever Wilton Lopez.  Lopez was to be sent over from the Houston Astros pending a physical.  However, after the physical, the deal failed to go through.  It hasn't been killed altogether, but it seems unlikely that Philadelphia would make the acquisition now. According to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly...

Deal For Wilton Lopez Hits Snag?

Our Corey Seidman reported yesterday that the Phillies were close to acquiring Houston Astros reliever Wilton Lopez per CSN’s Jim Salisbury. Lopez, 29, was due to be first-time arbitration eligible and is estimated to make around $1.4 million. While many Phillies fans were wondering who would be included in the trade, today Phillies fans may start to wonder if the trade will happen...

Are the Phillies a "Obvious Fit" For Cubs Outfielder Alfonso Soriano?

Many on Twitter and on our Facebook page pointed out that the release of Nate Schierholtz left the Phillies with few outfield options: John Mayberry, Domonic Brown, Darin Ruf, and Laynce Nix. I think it is clear that the Phillies will add one or two outfielders. The Phillies are linked...

Angels Reliever Jordan Walden Could Be a Phillies Fit Should Lopez Deal Fall Through

The agreed-to-but-not-final Wilton Lopez deal that may fall through gives us a little insight as to what the Phillies are thinking.   They want a reliever who can be strong in the 8th inning.  They want someone young, inexpensive, and who will be around a while.  That player could come from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Jordan Walden, suggests Marcus Morris of Pucktacular...

Hot Stove: Phillies Offer Pagan Four Years

Could we see this celebration in Philadelphia? Photo: AP Fresh from the desk of Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Phillies reportedly have offered center fielder Angel Pagan a four year deal. The 31-year old Pagan hit .288/.331/.440 with eight homers and 29 steals in a bounce-back 2012. His 2012 line was just slightly better than his career line of .281/.333/.424. Pagan has seemingly...
