The Philadelphia Phillies will send 3 players to Kansas City for the All Star Game. Pitchers Cole Hamels and Jonathan Papelbon were both selected. Most importantly, catcher Carlos Ruiz, who leads the majors in hitting and has been the Phillies MVP this year, was also selected by manager Tony LaRussa.

Phillies’ace Roy Halladay threw a bullpen session this week that went very well. Doc threw 33 pitches off a mound, the first time he had done so since being sidelined with a strained latissimus dorsi muscle. Doc threw his full arsenal of pitches and appeared to be pain free. Roy Halladay who was originally supposed to be out for 6-8 weeks, appears primed to return after the All Star Game.

As news of his All Star selection came down, so did reports of the Phillies shopping Cole Hamels. Cole Hamels is in the final year of his contract with the Phillies and is seeking a 7 year deal. Negotiations have seemed stalled for quite a whole now, and it appeared as though Hamels was headed toward free agency in November. Obviously if the Phillies were in a better position in the standings, they’d look at keeping Hamels. But with the team 10 games out of first place in the NL East, the Phillies may getting ready to make some moves.

Jim Thome was traded yesterday for two single A prospects. That prompted Ruben Amaro Jr. to say that the deal wasn’t the start of a “fire sale.” The report that Hamels is being shopped could be an indication that Amaro is not exactly being upfront about the Phillies’ intentions.Similar Posts:
