Jonathan Papelbon entered the game last night with the scored tied at 3. He thought he struck out Dee Gordon, but home plate umpire RJ Reyburn had a different take in the pitch. In fact, Reyburn had a different take on many pitches from both sides throughout the game. Reyburn called the pitch a ball, and Papelbon wound up giving up a triple to Gordon.

Gordon scored when the next batter stroked a single. It gave the Dodgers the lead and the game.

But this isn’t about one blown call from an umpire who usually presides over triple A games. It’s not even about the plethora of missed calls for Vance Worley and Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw.

This is about the unmitigated arrogance that seems to permeating MLB’s on field police department. The men in blue have been out of control, and there seems to be no consequences.

Papelbon certainly may face some consequences. He didn’t hold much back in offering his opinion of Reyburn’s performance last night.

“I thought he was terrible.” Papelbon offered after the loss. “All day. It wasn’t just that pitch. I thought he sucked.”

How MLB responds to Papelbon’s assessment of the umpire’s performance remains to be seen. But I’d be shocked if he isn’t missing some pocket change in the next couple of days.
