Out of the 9 Phillies Opening Day 2012 starters, 6 have landed either on the disabled list or with another team at some point during the year. And that does not even include Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, who started the year on the DL. So basically, 8 out of 9 regular starters missed a lot of time this year. The only one who avoided either a trade or the DL was Jimmy Rollins. It is fitting then that a 2-run shot from J-Roll last night led the team to a 3-game sweep of the Miami Marlins. Cliff Lee did his part as well, allowing just 1 run, which was unearned due to an error, over 7 innings. The win has placed the Phillies only 3 games back in the Wild Card race, which is something not many people saw coming. This team was beaten up so badly throughout most of the year and played so poorly that a possible playoff run, until now, seemed impossible. Here is a look at the Wild Card standings: But even after a 7-game win streak, is all this new playoff hope just fool’s gold or can the Phi...

Phillies win again; continue to inch closer in the standings

The problem with a Wild Card race is, and particularly with the Phillies pursuit of a wild card spot right now, is that you have to count on so many things to happen. Most importantly you have to win. Then you have to count on other teams that you’re not playing to lose. Everyone held up their end of the bargain last night, and the Philadelphia Phillies are suddenly 4 games out...

Offense Powers Phils Past Miami, Reach .500

Utley reached base five times tonight, powering a surging Phillies club. Photo: AP The Phillies offense bailed-out a good-but-not-great effort by Roy Halladay and a near-meltdown in the 55 minute seventh inning to win 9-7, winning their sixth in a row, and reaching the .500 mark for the first time since June 4. Big stops by B.J. Rosenberg and Phillippe Aumont powered the Phils out...

Phillies Bandwagon STILL Loading – All is not lost!

The Phillies winning streak came to an end and the Cardinals moved to 4 games ahead of the Phillies.  The Brewers also moved a half game ahead of the Phillies even though they did not play.  Is all lost? No, absolutely not! As predicted here, the Phillies need to go 15-5 in their last 20 games to get to the playoffs.   With 18 games remaining they now need to go 14-4 (Tough but...

Guatemala beats Antigua 1-0 in WCup qualifying

Carlos Ruiz scored in the first half to give Guatemala a 1-0 win over Antigua and Barbuda in CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. Ruiz rifled a shot into the back of the net in the 26th minute to give Guatemala the victory and all but eliminate Antigua from contention. Guatemala now shares the Group A lead with Jamaica ahead of its match against the United States later Tuesday...

Phillies at .500 now…..so does this mean the fans come will back?

Philadelphia, Pa – The Phillies beat Miami 9-7 and now at .500. They are the hottest team in baseball winning 10 of their last 12 games. The Phillies find themselves 4.5 games out a wild-card spot with 20 games left. This poses the question will the band-wagon fans that turned their backs on the Phillies do a one-eighty and come back?  If the Phillies keep winning then the...

Marlins outslugged by Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Jimmy Rollins homered and drove in three runs and Roy Halladay won again as the streaking Philadelphia Phillies outslugged the Miami Marlins 9-7 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight win. Despite allowing five runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings, Halladay (10-7) improved to 4-0 in his last five starts. The right-hander walked three and struck out six. ...

Fifteen-Hit Night Leads to 9-7 Win Over Marlins, Phillies Back at .500 Baseball

The Phillies are playing some exciting baseball right now, no doubt about that. Winning the wild card isn't too out of the question, but the Phillies are making it look more and more likely with the way they've been hitting the ball.  The Phils scored first tonight in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Ryan Howard hit into a double play which scored Jimmy Rollins...

Lee, Johnson Battle in Pitcher's Duel, Phillies Push to Seven Straight Wins

Last night's wacky 9-7 win must have exhausted the Phillies, as well the Marlins. On a travel day, this evening's game got underway at 4:05, so the two teams had to battle some nasty shadows. Unfortunately for the Fish, they also had to battle Cliff Lee. Let's skip ahead to the sixth inning with the score still at 0-0. Josh Johnson had not given up a hit through the...

With a 35-21 record since the All-Star break, the Phillies have finally gotten over the .500 mark at 72-71. With 19 games left to play, they are a mere three games behind the Cardinals for the elusive second wild-card berth in the National League. With Jimmy Rollins playing like a superhero, Kyle Kendrick pitching like a fourth ace, and the lineup and bullpen rounding into form...

Phillies-Astros Preview

An improbable run by the Philadelphia Phillies has pulled them within three games of the second NL wild card after being on pace to miss the playoffs just a few months ago. Helped by a favorable schedule, the Phillies will face a third straight division cellar dweller as they open a four-game series against the Houston Astros on Thursday night. After looking like it was out of...
