In the past couple of weeks there has been a lot of rumors surrounding left handed pitcher Cole Hamels. It's been said that the Phillies, in case they become sellers, could deal him as long as they can't sign him to a long-term deal.
Yesterday, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com said that the Phillies are preparing a “substantial offer” to Hamels to see if they can sign him in the next two weeks. He adds that in order to lock Hamels to a long-term deal they might have to offer him “one of the largest contracts in team history.”
Back in May, we learned that Hamels was looking for a seven-year deal, but I said I wouldn't go beyond five-years and $95 million. A deal similar to the one the Angels gave to C.J. Wilson's (5-year $77.5 million).
Stark though, believes that Cliff Lee's deal with the Phillies (five-year, $120 million) and Matt Cain's deal with the Giants (five-year, $112.5 million) will influence Hamel's negotiations. The problem with such a big contract for...

A team is a lost cause when there is talk about the star player’s future with the team.
That’s the case with the Phillies right now. After years of fans talking about their team’s chances of winning the World Series, they are not talking about it this year with the team stinking. They are more worried about Cole Hamels.
With the Phillies ace being a free agent, there...
According to ESPN's Jayson Stark (@jaysonst), the Phillies are preparing to offer left hander Cole Hamels a huge contract. Hamels, 28, is a soon-to-be-free-agent come this offseason and is going to be the hottest free agent on the market. Unless the Phillies can lock him up.
Hamels is 10-4 on the year with a 3.20 ERA in his last year in a contract. Back in the offseason, the...
The end his here. If we the Phillies fans want to admit it or not, the chances of our beloved team getting into the playoffs would take a miracle. After 87 games the Phillies are 14 games back and 16 in the loss column to Washington. For any shot at a wildcard, the Fightin’s will need to finish the season 55-20. Take these numbers and then take a hard look at...
In the latest news out of Phillies camp, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports that Cole Hamels agent, John Boggs, and Ruben Amaro, Jr. have had talks recently about a new contract for the homegrown lefty. It is said to be a “substantial” offer and the richest in team history.
Amaro and Pat Gillick had a very strong belief that pitchers should never be signed to longer than...

The vast majority of trade talk around the Phillies has centered on pitcher Cole Hamels. Truth is though that there are a number of other candidates to be wearing a different uniform before the calendar flips to August.

Damon JacksonIt’s no surprise that the Philadelphia Phillies have been a mess in 2012. It’s also not a surprise that Cole Hamels is could be out of the City of Brotherly Love. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, on the other hand, has been showing Hamels some brotherly love. The two had their lockers together for the All-Star game and told Hamels a very endearing statement.
The Phillies bad season has led to some interesting dilemmas. Not the least of which is what to do with Cole Hamels, who is heading toward free agency at the end of the season.
After a lot of banter about what Cole Hamels might fetch in trade, it was reported earlier today that the Phillies are preparing a “major offer” in an attempt to retain him past this season. It was also reported that the Nationals might be relatively quiet at the trade deadline, given that they have few holes to fill. And that’s true, if Stephen Strasburg doesn’t get shut...

The Brewers are willing to offer Zack Greinke around $100 million over 5 years while the Phillies are prepared to offer Cole Hamels an equally large contract extension. Greinke and Hamels were likely going to be the two best starters available at the deadline if their respective teams made them available.
My first thought was that this was potentially good news for the Cubs who...
